Colombo was founded by the Portuguese as a
small trading post. It gradually became the
capital of the coastal areas in the west of the
island. In 1815, when the island became part of
the British Empire, Colombo became its capital.
It lost this status only in the 1980s, but
nevertheless remained the financial and
commercial center of the country. Colombo has a
very diverse architecture that has been created
over centuries. Colonial buildings influenced by
the Portuguese, Dutch and British exist alongside
structures built in Buddhist, Hindu, Islamic and
Indian architectural styles. There are many
canals in the city, and the 65-hectare Beira lake
is located in the city center. It is one of the
most distinctive monuments. Colombo is the most
populous city of Sri Lanka and one of the popular
tourist attractions.
Colombo fue fundada por los portugueses como
un pequeño puesto comercial. Poco a poco se
convirtió en la capital de las zonas costeras del
oeste de la isla. En 1815, cuando la isla pasó a
formar parte del Imperio Británico, Colombo se
convirtió en su capital. Perdió este estatus
recién en la década de 1980, pero aún así siguió
siendo el centro financiero y comercial del país.
Colombo tiene una arquitectura muy diversa que se
ha creado a lo largo de siglos. Los edificios
coloniales influenciados por los portugueses,
holandeses y británicos coexisten con estructuras

obchodným centrom krajiny. Colombo má velmi
rôznorodú architektúru, ktorá sa vytvárala po
stárocia. Koloniálne budovy ovplyvnené
Portugalcami, Holandanmi a Britmi existujú popri
stavbách postavených v budhistickom,
hinduistickom, islamskom a indickom
architektonickom štýle. V meste je vela kanálov a
v centre sa rozkladá jazero Beira s rozlohou 65
hektárov. Je jednou z najvýraznejších pamiatok.
Colombo je najludnatejším mestom Srí Lanky a
jedna z vyhladávaných turistických atrakcií.
