1(7) And the LORD God formed man of the dust of
the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the
breath of life and man became a living soul. (8)
And the LORD God planted a garden eastward in
Eden and there he put the man whom he had
formed. (9) And out of the ground made the LORD
God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the
sight, and good for food the tree of life also
in the midst of the garden, and the tree of
knowledge of good and evil. (Ge. 27-9)
(22) And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is
become as one of us, to know good and evil and
now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of
the tree of life, and eat, and live forever (23)
Therefore the LORD God sent him forth from the
garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he
was taken. (24) So he drove out the man and he
placed at the east of the garden of Eden
Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every
way, to keep the way of the tree of life. (Ge.
322-24)
2The Tree of Life
- We reject the theory Genesis 1-11 is allegorical.
- Therefore, among other events and subjects
discussed, the account of the Tree of Life in the
Garden is more than a fairy tale. - It serves as a lesson to all.
3There are several important facts about the Tree
of Life.
- It Was a One-of-a-Kind Tree.
- It Existed as a One-Moment-in-Time Tree.
- It Foreshadowed the One-Who-Died-for-Alls Tree.
- It Contrasted the One-Bite-Which-Killed Tree.
4It Was a One-of-a-Kind Tree.
- The other trees were pleasant good for food
(Ge. 29,16 32 cf. Adam abused their use
38). - This was the only tree able to offer immortality.
5It Existed as a One-Moment-in Time Tree.
- The Tree was available on Earth so long as man
had no sin. - Upon mans sin, the tree was no longer an earthly
reality (Ge. 322-24).
6It Foreshadowed the One-Who-Died-for-Alls Tree.
- Through that Tree, spiritually immortal life is
available to all (Mt. 1128 Jn. 1010 cf. Jn.
411-14 635 146). - Gods redemption scheme preceded Creation.
- Physical life is from Adam, but spiritual life
from Christ.
- Jesus was nailed to a cross, or tree (Ac. 530
1039 1329 Ga. 313 1 Pe. 224) - Interestingly, He is the Branch of the roots of
Jesse (Is. Is. 111 532 Je. 235).
7It Contrasted the One-Bite-Which-Killed Tree.
- The tree of the knowledge of good and evil
- Until Adam Eve ate of it, they were innocent
(cf. Ge. 37). - To eat of it meant knowledge of right/wrong,
decent/indecent, truth/error - It meant death (1 Co. 1522, Ro. 512-21)
8It Contrasted the One-Bite-Which-Killed Tree.
- Questions to Consider
- Why did God create the tree of knowledge of good
evil and place it in the garden? - Was the tree intrinsically evil?
- By placing it there, was God tempting His
creation?
9It Contrasted the One-Bite-Which-Killed Tree.
- Humans are innocent until they transgress Gods
law, fully in control of their thoughts and
actions. - One sin separates.
- One sin kills the soul (Is. 591,2 Ja. 210).
