Title: Essential Models of Christian Leadership

1
Essential Models of Christian Leadership
  • 1 Thessalonians 27-12

2
Why Leadership?
The church so talked about in seminary is
neat, tidy and generally civilised. . . .
Denham Grierson, quoted in Weems, Church
Leadership, p. 100.

Why Leadership?
The church so talked about in seminary is
neat, tidy and generally civilised. A particular
congregation is never neat, sometimes barely
Christian and only rarely civilised. Denham
Grierson, quoted in Weems, Church Leadership, p.
100.

Essentials of Christian Leadership
I. God uses leaders who trust God to do His work.
(14,5) II. God uses leaders who speak with
conviction. (15b) III. God uses leaders who
live in such a way that their life speaks louder
than their words. (15c-8)

Luke 2224-27
24 And there arose also a dispute among them as
to which one of them was regarded to be greatest.
25 And He said to them, The kings of the
Gentiles lord it over them and those who have
authority over them are called Benefactors.
26 But it is not this way with you, but the one
who is the greatest among you must become like
the youngest, and the leader like the servant.
27 For who is greater, the one who reclines at
the table or the one who serves? Is it not the
one who reclines at the table? But I am among you
as the one who serves.
6
The Temptations of a Leader
  • I. Leaders are tempted to give up when things get
    tough. (21,2)
  • Leaders are tempted to alter their message in
    order to please people. (23,4)
  • III. Leaders are tempted to selfishly use those
they lead in order to get what they want. (25,6)

The detached style of leadership will not be
successful in the 21st century. Todays employees
demand more personal relationships with their
leaders before they will give themselves fully to
their jobs. They insist on having access to their
leaders, knowing that it is in the openness and
depth of the relationship with the leader that
trust and commitment are built.
