About this lesson
  • This lesson is an excerpt taken from the 2nd
chapter of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Summary
of this chapter Tom was punished by Aunt Polly
to whitewash the fence. Instead of doing the job
by himself, Tom tricked the neighborhood boys
into completing his entire chore by pretending to
love whitewashing and made other boys covet the
labor. As a result, he had not only finished
whitewashing the fence for 3 times, but also
bankrupted the other boys. Besides, he had
discovered a great law of human actionin order
to make a man covet a thing, it is only necessary
to make the thing difficult to attain.

Once Mark Twain was traveling with a friend of
his. His friend lost his money, so he asked Mark
Twain to buy a train ticket for him. But I
don't have enough money to buy two tickets, said
Mark Twain. His friend didn't know what to
do. You can hide under my seat when the
conductor comes to check the tickets, Mark Twain
said to him.
When the conductor came to check the tickets,
Mark Twain gave him two tickets, one for himself
and one for his friend. He said to the
conductor, My friend is a strange man. When he
travels on a train, he does not like to sit on
the seat. He likes to lie on the floor under the
seat. Everyone in the train looked at his
friend under the seat and laughed

More than 50,000,000 people live in the
rainforest of the world and most of them do not
hurt the forest they live in. They eat the fruits
that grow on the forest trees, but they do not
cut them down. Some people tried to save their
forest because it was their home. But the people
who wanted gold were stronger. People who wanted
to cut down the forest killed those who wanted
to keep the forest.

My favourite great book is The Adventure
of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain. Tom lives with his
aunt Polly in a quiet street of St Petersburg,
Missouri. Hes a lively and clever young boy, and
he finds himself in many exciting adventures (??)
. He runs away with his two friends, Huck Finn
and Joe, to an island in the middle of the
Mississippi River for several days. With Huck he
goes looking for treasure, with Becky he gets
lost in a cave, and finally, they find a box of
gold.
57
My favourite scene in the book is when
everyone thinks Tom is dead. He decides to go to
his own funeral. He hides and watches for a time,
and then suddenly he appears. Everyone is
surprised to see him but theyre also pleased to
see him alive. Tom is the hero of the story,
but there are other important characters. Huck is
an outsider and everyone is afraid of him. Becky
is pretty with fair hair, Joe is Toms best
friend, and Injun Joe is the bad man of the story.

The theme of the story is about
children growing up. It describes how strangers
are seen in small towns of America. Finally, it
talks about freedom, social rules and how people
are punished (??) for bad behavior.
Why do I think The Adventure of Tom Sawyer is a
great book? Mark Twain wrote the story in 1876,
but its still read and loved by people all over
the world today. And although its only a story,
Twain wrote it in the everyday English of the
southern states of America in the 19th century,
so it sounds very real. Today its thought to be
one of the greatest books in American literature.
Go on read it! I know youll enjoy it, too.
