What is a Learning Disability?
  • A learning disability is not visible and usually
    does not leave signs to offer support
  • LD which is the common name for it is something
    that affects a persons ability to interpret what
    they see or hear

What are the types of Learning Disabilities?
  • They can be divided into three main categories
  • Developmental speech and language disorders
  • Academic skills disorders
  • "Other," a catch-all that includes certain
    coordination disorders and learning handicaps not
    covered by the other terms

What causes Learning Disabilities?
  • Errors in fetal brain development
  • Genetic factors
  • Problems during pregnancy or devlivery
  • Tobacco, Alcohol, and other drug use
  • Toxins in the childs environment

How are Learning Disabilities first Identified?
  • Looking for delayed developmental milestones
  • First words
  • Eye contact
  • First steps
  • Reading
  • Socialization

Can they be outgrown or cured?
  • Most do not outgrow their learning disability but
    learn to adapt to it
  • Since most disabilities are a learning delay
    children are able to catch up given time
  • With proper help and encouragement for the child
    there is hope

Is Medication Available?
  • For many years children have benefited from the
    medication used on their learning disability
  • Ritalin or Dexedrine are common medications used
  • They are affective for 3 to 4 hours and then move
    out of the body within 12 hours

  • Megavitamins
  • Colored lenses
  • Special diets
  • Sugar-free diets
  • Body stimulation or manipulation
