Audible Pedestrian Signals
Installation Criteria
  • Pedestrian Generators (disabled centers, schools,
    public transit)
  • Push Buttons (pretimed vs actuation). Are they
    working properly?
  • Major Streets Widths
  • Continuous, Unobstructed Crosswalks Indication
    Visibility
  • Request from Visually-Impaired Patron

Audible Pedestrian Signals
Installation Time
  • If criteria met during time of design for new or
    major modification project, automatic.
  • Funding for up to 10 locations per year to
respond to customer requests. Denied requests
    are presented at DAC meetings.
  • Requests take about 6 to 8 weeks.

Pedestrian Countdown Signals
Background
  • CSJ evaluation for the California Traffic Control
    Devices committee (CTCDC) in 2001
  • MUTCD 2003 discusses use recommends operation
    consistency. Still not California approved.
  • State of California to adopt MUTCD in August 04
with supplement (Countdown not discussed in
    supplement yet).

Downtown, will use the Countdown Modules.
  • Deployment outside of Downtown will occur after
    Caltrans adoption of the device.

Equipment Operation Requirements
  • Filled Upraised Hand/Walking Person Indications
  • Double Row Countdown
  • Start counting at Flashing Dont Walk. Terminate
at the end of the Flashing Dont Walk (begin of
    yellow)

New PPB Equipment
Tactile Push Buttons
  • Vibrating actuator w/directional arrow when
    WALK indication is in effect.
  • Ambient programmable audible messages.
