Purpose of this Presentation
To describe procedures for the effective use, by
farmers or extension officers, of TP-D hard copy
guides for the evaluation of feeding and
management in the field

Stage 1 Assessment of the Current Basal Diet and
Management
Identify, with the farmer, the pictures in the
guide that best represent the current situation
for the five dynamic input variables
  • Stage of lactation (early lactation 1-3 months,
    mid lactation 4-7 months, late lactation
    gt7months)
  • Body weight change (gaining weight, maintaining
    weight, losing weight)

  • Calf rearing system (1st to 3rd month suckling,
    4th to 6th month suckling, weaned)
  • Forage quality (poor, medium, good)
  • Forage quantity fed to the animal (1, 2 or 3
    loads)

Stage 2 Recording the Current Basal Diet and
Management
Transfer the code (black, striped, white)
corresponding to the picture of your choice into
the appropriate box on the TP-D barcode e.g.
box number I on the TP-D barcode for the code
corresponding with the choice made for Stage of
lactation box number II with the corresponding
code for body weight change, etc.

Match the code obtained by with the same code on
the appropriate bar code page

Count the number of white dots next to the bar
code to obtain the predicted marketable milk
production from basal in the milk measure used
(in this case a 500 ml measure)
