1CYCLING TOWNS AND CITIES OF THE FUTURE SHARING
THE EXAMPLES OF BEST PRACTICE
2- Cycle England set up a Cycling Towns of the
Future project, with 6 demonstration towns
Aylesbury, Exeter, Lancaster, Derby, Darlington
and Brighton and Hove, sharing a budget of 17m. - Projects combining capital and revenue schemes
that helped boost levels of cycling. This
generally involved establishing and promoting a
network of cycle routes, mixing hard and soft
measures in varying proportions.

5Establishing a network Aylesbury and Darlington
- A network of mainly traffic free, colour-coded
routes, with associated promotional material

and signage, including distances in minutes. - Darlingtons research into travel choices showed
overestimating time for cycle journeys, and
underestimating it for car journeys.

28What lessons have we learnt from the CDT project?
- High level support needs to be obtained, through
presentation of cycle plans to Councillors and
Senior Officers - Stronger working links are needed with Highways
Maintenance. - Closer working needed between officers concerned
with infrastructure and those with training and
