Title: CYCLING TOWNS AND CITIES OF THE FUTURE SHARING THE EXAMPLES OF BEST PRACTICE

1
CYCLING TOWNS AND CITIES OF THE FUTURE SHARING
THE EXAMPLES OF BEST PRACTICE
2
  • Cycle England set up a Cycling Towns of the
Future project, with 6 demonstration towns
    Aylesbury, Exeter, Lancaster, Derby, Darlington
and Brighton and Hove, sharing a budget of 17m.
  • Projects combining capital and revenue schemes
that helped boost levels of cycling. This
generally involved establishing and promoting a
network of cycle routes, mixing hard and soft
    measures in varying proportions.

3
Types of Infrastructure
  • Shared use of improved footways
  • Cycling freeways and boulevards
  • Signage
  • Advanced stop lines
  • Bridges
  • Toucan crossings
  • Priority crossings over side roads for shared use
    footways
  • Zoned and timed works programme
  • Allowing cycling in pedestrianised areas

4
Promotion
  • Giving the network its identity colour coding
    and signage
  • Publicity materials (maps, leaflets, web pages)
  • Working with employers and schools (Bike It!)
  • Working with communities (Health on Wheels an
    exercise referral scheme, community grants)
  • Personalised Travel Plans
  • Road Safety and cycle training at schools, cycle
    maintenance training
  • Website and media coverage
  • Events

5
Establishing a network Aylesbury and Darlington
  • A network of mainly traffic free, colour-coded
    routes, with associated promotional material
route map and individual route leaflets, branding
and signage, including distances in minutes.
  • Darlingtons research into travel choices showed
overestimating time for cycle journeys, and
    underestimating it for car journeys.

28
What lessons have we learnt from the CDT project?
  • High level support needs to be obtained, through
presentation of cycle plans to Councillors and
    Senior Officers
  • Stronger working links are needed with Highways
    Maintenance.
  • Closer working needed between officers concerned
with infrastructure and those with training and
    promotion.
