Title: Qualification

1
Qualification
A statement can be made in any number of manners.
One of the principal stylistic characteristics
that we find in peoples writing is the amount of
qualification employed. Example Basic statement
The new economy is driven by technology. Qualified
version of that statement Many aspects of
todays economy are affected by technology. The
more qualified claim is easier to defend, though
it is less exciting to make.

Qualification
  • Many of Kellys critics point to the lack of
    qualification in his writing
  • His main failure is to think that the business
model of the software industry, in which the
first copy of a product may cost many millions of
dollars to produce but subsequent copies cost
only cents, will spread to all economic activity.
  • He also writes in the best Tom Peters style, a
rapid-fire blur of neologisms and breathless
declarations that all the rules have changed,
that there are limitless opportunities for those
who have the courage to let go of old
    assumptions.
  • New Rules for the New Economy is
techno-utopianism in all its fullness adolescent
    rantings against authority promiscuous
generalizations that would be maddening if they
weren't so silly blissful ignorance of nuance
    and complication.

Qualification
  • Shapiro and Varian, by contrast, write in an
    understated, qualified style. Compare these
passages from both books, each stating
    essentially the same thing
  • Kelly Plentitude, not scarcity, governs the
    network economy. Duplication, replication, and
copies run in excess. Whatever can be made, can
be made in abundance (p. 39).
  • Shapiro and Varian In traditional industries,
reducing your average cost of production usually
means focusing on unit costs of production using
supply chain management, workflow analysis, and
other tools to cut costs of parts, assembly, and
distribution. With information goods, unit costs
of production are negligible and supply chain
management and related techniques usually dont
help much with the first-copy costs. The key to
reducing average cost in information markets is
to increase sales volume (p. 28).
