PROGRAM PURPOSE
  • Grants authorized to meet the costs of
  • traineeships that will pay all or part of the
  • costs of the tuition, books, and fees of the
  • advanced nurse education programs, and
  • reasonable living expenses.

ELIGIBLE APPLICANTS
  • Collegiate schools of nursing
  • Academic health centers and
  • Other public or private entities capable of
    carrying out the legislative purpose.

ACCREDITATION
  • A collegiate school of nursing must be
  • accredited by a body recognized by the
  • Secretary of Education such as National
  • League for Nursing Accreditation Commission
    (NLNAC), Commission on Collegiate Nursing
    Education (CCNE).
  • Both institutional and graduate nursing program
    accreditations are required before the
    application can be considered for funding.

ACCREDITATION OF NEW PROGRAMS
  • New programs that are not yet accredited
  • must provide documentation from the
  • Department of Education that indicates
  • reasonable assurance that the program will meet
    the accreditation standards of NLNAC or CCNE
    prior to the beginning of the academic year
    following the normal graduation date of students
    of the first entering class.

ACCREDITATION OF NEW PROGRAMS
  • New Programs should contact the Department of
    Education, Accreditation and State Liaison Unit
    at (202) 219-7011 and follow instructions in
    application guidance.
  • Documentation of the assurance from the
    Department of Education must be submitted with
    the application.

PROGRAM APPROVALS
  • New programs must identify all steps in the
    approval process and provide documentation of
    approval, i.e. copy of letter or meeting minutes
    from
  • Nursing Faculty Committee
  • Institutional Committees/Boards
  • State bodies (State Boards of Nursing, Higher
    Education Boards)
  • National Professional Associations (CCNE, NLNAC)
  • Schools must submit documentation of all
    approvals with the application.

USE OF GRANT FUNDS
  • Stipends (maximum of 8,800 per student)
    pro-rated for training periods less than 12
    months.
  • Full tuition and fees are allowable costs.
  • Trainee travel not allowable.

USE OF GRANT FUNDS CONT.
  • Required program textbooks are allowable up to
    500 per trainees
  • Only full-time, first-year nurse anesthesia
    students may be supported under the AENT program.
  • Institutions should submit a separate Nurse
    Anesthetist Traineeship Program grant application
    to support nurse anesthesia students enrolled
    beyond the first 12 months of study.

ELIGIBLE STUDENTS
  • Eligible Student must be
  • Enrolled full-time or part-time (within the last
    12 months of study prior to graduation)
  • In an advanced education nursing program for
    preparation as a
  • nurse practitioner,
  • nurse-midwife,
  • nurse anesthetist,
  • clinical nurse specialist,
  • public health nurse,
  • nurse administrator,
  • nurse educator,
  • or other nurse specialty that meet the program
    requirements

ELIGIBLE STUDENTS
  • Students must also be
  • Pursuing a Masters or doctoral degree, a
    combined RN to Masters degree, a nurse-midwifery
    certificate, or a post-nursing Masters
    certificate
  • Citizen of the United States, a non-citizen
    national, or foreign national who possesses a
    visa permitting permanent residence in the United
    States
  • Eligible for national nursing certification in
    the nursing specialty or field of study (as
    applicable) following graduation

STATUTORY FUNDING PREFERENCE
  • Preference will be given to qualified
  • applicants that demonstrate a
  • High rate of graduates accepting positions in
    medically underserved areas
  • Minimum of 45 of graduates who spend at least
    50 of work time in these areas

SPECIAL CONSIDERATION
  • Special consideration will be given to
  • eligible applicants who
  • will use the award to train advanced education
    nurses who will practice in Health Profession
    Shortage Areas (HPSAs)
  • provide applicant assurance and
  • document a minimum of 10 of students who sign
    commitments to practice in HPSAs after graduation.

  • Healthy People 2010 is a national initiative
    led by HHS that sets priorities for all HRSA
    programs. The initiative has two major goals
  • To increase the quality and years of a healthy
    life.
  • Eliminate our countrys health disparities.
