When Texas was part of Mexico, there were
Americans, like Stephen F. Austin who encouraged
other Americans to move to Texas.
71
There were also Mexican citizens, like Jose
Navarro who lived in Texas.
72
Navarro and Austin both worked to keep Texans
free. Even though Austin was born in the United
States and Navarro was born in Mexico, both men
wanted the best for Texas.
73
When Texas declared its independence from Mexico,
Navarro was one of the men who signed the Texas
Declaration of Independence.

including sections that would protect the rights
of Hispanic Texans.

After Texas won its independence from Mexico,
Jose Navarro served in the state senate. He
continued to support Hispanic rights and worked

Famous People become famous for lots of different
reasons. A lot of them help in the government
like Stephen Austin and Jose Navarro. But even

81
Annie Purl was a teacher. She taught for many,
many years. Many people here in Georgetown
remember being in Miss Annies class.
82
In 1948 Annie Purl Elementary was named for Annie
Purl, to show her how much her teaching meant to
the children of Georgetown.
83
The air blows sweet with grass new-mown,And the
children bend to their taskHearts to open and
minds to lead -What more could a teacher
ask?The room is large, and the light is
good,And theres chalk dust over the floorBut
future citizens come and goEach day through my
open doorTheres a glimpse from our Magnolia
tree,And a glint of the sprinkler thats blue
-Oh, Maker of money and Lover of Ease,I
wouldnt exchange with you. There are piles of
papers to check tonight,There are problems to
numb the brain. But what is defeat when each
shining dawnBrings the will to begin again? Our
flag floats high from the school yard pole,And -
maybe Im a foolBut of all the positions the
world could giveIm glad that Im teaching
school.
Annie Purl wrote this poem in 1947. It was
published in the Williamson County Sun.
