the way to heaven. They believe that there is one
God. Most Christians are members of one of three

Warming-up Activities (4)
A Question what are the challenges/problems of
studying abroad mentioned in the passage?
Answer 1) Finding a host family (Para. 5) 2)
Covering all kinds of expenses (Para. 6) 3)
Learning to take care of themselves (Para. 7) 4)
Saying good-bye to your loved ones (Para. 8) 5)

(Para. 11) 8) The cost of acquiring a good

17
Text Analysis (1)
Every year a great number of teenagers leave home
to study in America. They go there for a variety
of purposes, which include increasing their
command of English, finishing high school or
understanding American ways of life. But no
matter what purposes they have in mind, they can
hardly avoid encountering such problems as
different customs, new life style, homesickness,
etc., which may become a torture to them.
Therefore, studying overseas is completely a
cultural shock .
18
Text Analysis (2)
Structure of the whole passage
19
Text Analysis (3)
The author explains the purposes of people going
abroad based on statistics and direct quotation
from Gloria, a Brazilian student who studies in
America, thus making the exposition more reliable
and vivid.
A general statement supported by specific reasons
is a typical device applied to this part the
author first points out that things are not
always so easy, and then devotes eight paragraphs
to explaining the problems to be encountered in
the new land.
(Paras. 1-2)
Through narrating the flight to Los Angeles, the
author naturally leads the reader to the topic of
the whole passage studying abroad, which
indicates the start of a new experience and a
life without parents protection for a period of
time .
Many people study in America every year.
(Paras. 3-4)
People study abroad for a variety of reasons.
(Paras. 5-12)
People encounter many problems in America.

Writing
Writing
86
Writing (1)
Write about both the advantages disadvantages
of sth.
When we write on a certain topic, it is natural
that we cover both the positive and negative
aspects of it so as to making our writing
complete, comprehensive and convincing. Look at
the following composition which deals with both
the advantages and disadvantages of studying
abroad.
87
Writing (2)
On Studying Abroad
In recent years, studying abroad has become
increasingly popular. / studying abroad has
become more or less a fashion. /there has been a
trend for young people to go abroad to study.
Studying abroad has become especially popular
among college students.
88
Writing (3)
It goes without saying studying abroad benefits
students in many aspects. /it is hardly too much
to say that there are numerous benefits/positive
aspects of studying abroad. Above all/first of
all/the most important of all, going abroad to
study enables students to be exposed to the most
advanced/the latest development in science and
technology and have access to the most up-to-date
teaching facilities and teaching approaches,
which will surely benefit them academically.
Secondly/in addition/furthermore, by studying in
a foreign country, students can learn a foreign
language and become familiar with a brand new
culture, thus broadening their horizon/view/vision
. Last but not the least/ whats equally
important, students learn to live independently(
live on their own), which does good to their
growth and their future.
89
Writing (4)
However, on no account should we
neglect/overlook/ignore the problems/
disadvantages/the negative aspects of studying
abroad. To start with, language is a barrier.
Another problem is that students may feel
homesick or lonely if he studies in a foreign
school alone. It will take him a long time to
adjust to the new environment. Besides, different
lifestyles/cultural customs and strange
environment will also pose difficulties to
students. Having taken all the factors into
consideration, I take the position that there are
more advantages of overseas study than
disadvantages. /overseas study brings more good
than harm. /bring more benefits than problems. If
conditions permit, I will seize on the
opportunity to go abroad to study. And I am sure
I will take good advantage of the experience
to enrich myself both academically and
culturally.
