  • The Hawthorne Studies
  • A very famous series of productivity improvement
    studies carried out at the Hawthorne plant of
    Western Electric during the 1920s by Elton Mayo
    of Harvard University.
  • One unintended outcome of the study was this
    Hawthorne Effect, which describes how people,
    singled out for a study, may improve their
    performance simply because of the added attention
    they receive from the researchers, rather than
    the specific factors being tested. The potential
    outcome of managerial revenge for negative
    responses is not a factor.
  • This effect has been seen to be transferred to
    virtually any large company study or survey
    series. We can see the effects in simple
    performance survey scales of Favorable vs.
    industry ratings. There are often unkown or
    hidden factors that are operating.
  • The other known result of the Hawthorne studies
    is that the positive effect of attention wore
    off over time.
  • What that could mean for any company is that,
    year over year, results may decline and there
    will be no specific correlation to root cause.
    Thus the need for constant measuring TOOLS to see
    how any process is currently performing.
