3Value of RDA
- Resource Description and Access or RDA
- is the standard that replaces the Anglo-American
Cataloguing Rules (AACR) - is a web-based tool
- RDA offers
- Improved description of digital resources,
unpublished resources and resources with multiple
characteristics - More guidance on the creation of authority
headings - Compatibility with a range of encoding schema
- Clearly defined data elements and improved
granularity - Opportunities for better catalogue displays and
navigation - Opportunities for more efficient data creation
4US testing of RDAs goals
- Goals that were met
- Provide a consistent, flexible and extensible
framework for all types of resources and all
types of content - Be independent of the format, medium, or system
used to store or communicate the data - Goals that were mostly or partially met
- Be compatible with internationally established
principles and standards - Enable users to find, identify, select, and
obtain resources appropriate to their information
needs - Be compatible with descriptions and access points
in existing catalogues and databases - Be readily adaptable to newly emerging database
structures
5Outcomes of the test
- We believe that the long-term benefits of
adopting RDA will be worth the short - term anxieties and costs You may ask if this
is the time to make a dramatic - change in cataloging. Our collective answer is
that libraries must create linkages to - all other information resources in this Web
environment. We must begin now. - Indefinite delay in implementation simply means a
delay in our effective - relationships with the broader information
community. - Extract from Statement from the Executives of the

library system ahead of RDA implementation? - Will I need to convert our existing records?
- What relationship will there be between RDA
Toolkit and my library system? - Will changes to catalogue displays be required?
