what are their symptoms?
  • Do Now Take a look at page 109, how might you
    rate those stressors?
  • Remember Guest Speaker Tomorrow
  • HW due on Wednesday Read Text pgs 135-138.
    Create a chart in your notebooks with five
    columns titled Mood Disorders, Anxiety
    Disorders, Somatoform Disorders, Personality
    Disorders and Dissociative Disorders. In each
    column list the types of mental illnesses
    associated with each and write a one sentence
    description of the disorder.
  • Slides have been posted for test. Check back for
    Wednesdays lesson which has not yet been posted!

Types of Mental Disorders
  • Organic Disorders Caused by a physical problem
    that impairs brain functions either permanently
    or temporarily
  • Degenerative Disorders Progressive deterioration
    of tissue over several years
  • Functional Disorders Develop as a result of a
    persons environment (childhood or stress)
  • Symptoms include Personality or mood changes
  • Caused by Chemical Imbalance (temporary or
    permanent)

  • Affects about 1.1 of US Population
  • Linked to genetics
  • Age of onset for females is 20s and 30s
  • Age of onset for males is late teens
  • Rarely seen in children
  • Currently no cure only treatment options to
    alleviate symptoms
