    destroying the natural grasses whose roots
    anchored the soil.

  • Dust damaged farms across a 150,000square-mile
    region Dust Bowl KS, OK, TX, CO, and NM.
  • Crops ruined loaded families and belongings on
    trucks and headed West Sometimes called Okies.
  • Unemployment remained high bread lines
  • People lost homes homeless sought shelter under
    bridges and overpasses

  • Children grew up quickly worked quit school
    dropped out of school teens left home so as not
    to burden their family.

    abandoned their families.

Unions Gain Strength
  • Minorities joined a new Union, the Congress of
    Industrial Organizations (CIO).Unlike the AFL, it
    included the skilled and unskilled worker.
  • Some had sit-down strikes to prevent hiring
    strike-breakers.
  • Wagner Act gave unions the ability to negotiate
    better working conditions.

  • A larger role for government increased the power
    of the president expanded federal government.
