• Dust damaged farms across a 150,000square-mile
  region Dust Bowl KS, OK, TX, CO, and NM.
• Crops ruined loaded families and belongings on
  trucks and headed West Sometimes called Okies.
  
• Unemployment remained high bread lines
• People lost homes homeless sought shelter under
  bridges and overpasses

Impact on Women and Children

• Children grew up quickly worked quit school
  dropped out of school teens left home so as not
  to burden their family.
• Family life suffered men became irritable
  abandoned their families.

• Eleanor Roosevelt traveled extensively acting as
  her husbands eyes and ears.
• More women held gov. positions than ever before
  Frances Perkins secretary of labor first
  female cabinet officer.
• Black Cabinet African Americans advisors. FDR
  did not back some civil rights.

Unions Gain Strength

• Minorities joined a new Union, the Congress of
  Industrial Organizations (CIO).Unlike the AFL, it
  included the skilled and unskilled worker.
• Some had sit-down strikes to prevent hiring
  strike-breakers.
• Wagner Act gave unions the ability to negotiate
  better working conditions.

• A larger role for government increased the power
  of the president expanded federal government.

  gov. controls and more freedom with economy.
