Cont Community Disasters
  • Sometimes called mass-casualty disasters
  • Your facility will receive emergency patients
  • Your facility can become a triage (screening a
number of disaster victims to determine who has
the most severe injuries and needs to be treated
    first) center.
  • As HCW, you will have to work with outside
  • medical personnel, emergency personnel, and
the CDC (Center for Disease Control).

6
Disaster or Evacuation Plan
  • Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care
    Organization requires healthcare facilities to
    have a disaster plan.
  • The plan should include
  • chain of command
  • transporting pts.
  • determining pt
  • destinations
  • handling pt. with special needs
  • defining staff responsibilities
  • conducting training drills
  • planning for recovery

7
  • Evacuating within the facility (internal) or
    outside (external) the facility-
  • Internal- Pt and personnel shall remain in a
secured areas until a All Clear has been given.
  • External- Pts moved to another facility by
    ambulance or other transportation.

8
3 main principles HCW need to follow in a disaster
  • Stay calm
  • follow the policy of the health care facility
  • provide safety of yourself and patient
  • HCW are legally responsible for familiarizing
themselves with disaster policies so appropriate
action can be taken when a disaster strikes

9
Assisting with Non-ambulatory (cant walk) pt.
  • Use wheelchairs
  • Two person- Use a blanket and work with two
persons on either side of the blanket to carry a
    person
  • One person-Lie the pt. on a blanket and drag
    the pt. to safety
  • Two person- one worker squats at the pts
head, reaches under the pt. arms from behind and
the second person squats between the pts knees
and grasps the outside of the pts legs.
