  • Progressive Movement- early 20th century movement
    to return control of govt to people and restore
    economic opportunity and correct injustices.
  • Movement of middle class against paying taxes to
    corrupt city governments and desired better city
    services.

  • Jane Addams and settlement houses for
    immigrants. Protection for child workers, but
    state laws were poorly enforced.
  • Theodore Roosevelt-1st president to give rights
    to workers. Carried out anti-trust act, worked
    out interstate compacts with railroad.

    (domestic tension) we needed to expand.
  • Social Darwinism influenced American expansionism
    saying Americans were superior to other cultures.
  • Imperialism idea emerged
  • Competition for European markets contributed to
    U.S. emerging as world power.

  • U.S. involvement marked us emerging as a world
    power.
  • Getting Hawaii and Manila Harbor was a good
    fueling stop on the way to Far East.
  • Anti-imperialist said this was a waste b/c they
    wouldnt be added to the union. McKinley said it
    was our duty to govern them b/c they couldnt
    govern themselves.
  • Treaty ending war recognized us owning
    Phillipines, Guam, Puerto Rico, and U.S. control
    of Cuba.
  • Supreme Court said these people do not have the

    diplomacy-protection of our money invested in
    Latin American and wed intervene if necessary.

    men .

    century.
