2Awlgrip Coatings a heritage of quality
- The Awlgrip brand is the undisputed world leader
in the Yacht Professional Topsides segment. - It is both a well established brand and a trusted
manufacturer of high performance coating
solutions. - Since 1972, Awlgrip has specialized in the
development and manufacturing of technically
advanced urethane, epoxy, high solids and
antifouling coatings to meet the harsh demands of
the marine industry. - All manufacturing procedures are audited both
internally and externally to stringent ISO
criteria, whilst environmental concerns are
addressed by compliance with strict EPA, OSHA and
air quality standards. - Since 2002, Awlgrip Coatings has become an Akzo
Nobel company.
3Boat cleaning basics
- Not only are boats valuable properties, but they
are also subjected to harsh environments during
the course of their normal use. - For these reasons, preventive maintenance should
be a regular activity for boat owners.
4Maintaining your boats natural beauty
- Cleaning is one of the easiest tasks that the
boat owner can undertake it also has the
advantage of producing a result that is
immediately visible. - In this presentation we will look at maintaining
your boats natural beauty using AWLWASH and
AWLCARE products from Awlgrip.
5Safety when using boat cleaning products
- Some boat cleaning products in common usage are
either strongly acidic, like rust remover or
strongly alkaline, like degreaser. - In general, for all boat cleaning products
- always read the manufacturer's full Health
Safety guidelines and all instructions for use
that are printed on the label. - When working on a slippery deck surface wear
- Deck shoes
- Life jacket
- Safety harness
- Safety glasses
- Chemical resistant gloves
6Cleaning equipment
- As with all jobs, using the correct equipment
makesthe task easier. - The material requirements for keeping your boat
cleanare few and uncomplicated - Brushes
- Often used without the brush handle
- Brushes with a soft texture (yellow) are
suitablefor use on Awlgrip painted surfaces - Whilst, brushes with a coarse texture (white)
should not be used on painted surfaces but
reserved for use on non-slip decks and other
tough surfaces. - Sponges
- Either natural or synthetic
7Cleaning equipment
- A bucket
- remember to adhere to recommended dilutions
- An old toothbrush
- to get to those difficult-to-reach areas
- A chamois
- a synthetic one is fine for drying and they are
cheaper and longer lasting than the natural
version too!
8The correct products to maintainyour boats
painted surfaces
- Most household cleaner soaps and concentrates
are - Intended to tackle grease,
- Designed for use on Formica and vinyl, not
painted surfaces. - As a result they have a high alkalinity and are
much too harsh for use on high performance
coatings - they can strip the wax off a boats hull a lot
faster than specially formulated boat soaps. - Furthermore, alkaline household cleaners can also
etch the painted surface if they are allowed to
dry on the surface.
9Acidity/alkalinity of cleaning products
- The pH scale is used by chemists to classify the
acidity or alkalinity of a substance. - The pH value is effectively a measure of the
concentration of hydrogen ions relative to
neutral distilled water, which has a pH value
of 7. - Very strong acids, such as battery acid, have low
pH values that tend towards zero very strong
alkalis, such as bleach, have pH values that tend
towards 14. - AWLWASH has been formulated with a neutral pH
value of 7.

10Products NOT to be used on Awlgrip topcoats
- Do NOT use abrasives, scratch pads, or
compoundson Awlgrip topcoats. - Also, do NOT use
- Dish detergent, metal polishes, acidic soapsor
soaps with a high alkalinity - Abrading the surface reduces the overall lifeof
the finish - by giving dirt a place to cling, and
- wearing out the resin layer.
- Do NOT allow teak cleaners to come into contact
with Awlgrip topcoats. - Most teak cleaners contain acids or caustic
agents that can stain and discolor high
performance Awlgrip topcoats.
11Awlgrip boat maintenance products
- The boat maintenance products offered by Awlgrip
have been specifically developed to ensure that
Awlgrip topcoats last for years. - Using these dedicated fit for purpose products
will help to eliminate the premature dulling of
the coating that the use of unsuitable, harsh
cleaners can cause. - Using AWLWASH and AWLCARE together will provide
the safest and most effective protection for your
boats Awlgrip topcoats.

protectivepolymer coating which lasts through
multiple washings. - Removes mild stains such as water spots and
diesel soot. - Increases resistance to attack from acid rain and
other environmentalpollutants with regular
applications.
14Lab testing gloss retention ability of AWLCARE
- Recently the Awlgrip laboratory tested the gloss
retention capabilities of AWLCARE on two samples
of AWLGRIP 2 Vivid Red topcoat during prolonged
(3000hrs) QUV testing - Sample 1 was washed in AWLWASH,
- Sample 2 was washed in AWLWASH followed by
coating with AWLCARE. - Recommended concentrations were used in all
cases. - The QUV machine replicates extreme environmental
conditions, alternating between - 4hrs of exposure 100 UV light at 140F/60C and
- 4hrs of exposure 100 humidity at 106F/41C.
- At intervals of 250 hours, the sample panels were
removed, tested for gloss values, re-treated
accordingly (as per sample 1 or sample 2) and
re-subjected to QUV testing. - All gloss values were measured in controlled
laboratory conditions using 60 gloss meter.

16Test conclusions
- The sample that had been washed in AWLWASH and
then coated with AWLCARE (sample 2) performed
significantly better than the sample that had
just been washed in AWLWASH (sample 1) - Sample 1 showed a deterioration in gloss value
of 23.1 units after 3000 hours - Whilst sample 2 showed a deterioration in gloss
value of just 13.1 units over the same full test
period. - CONCLUSION
- The paint maintenance products offered by
Awlgrip have undergone extensive laboratory and
marine testing to guarantee their quality and
effectiveness - Application of AWLCARE can improve topcoat gloss
retention by up to 12, even in the most arduous
conditions.
17Using AWLWASH
- Rinse surface thoroughly prior to washing.
- Add 1 ounce of AWLWASH per gallon of water.
- Wash surface while still wet from initial
rinsing. Use a soft, non-abrasive applicator when
washing the surface. - Do not allow AWLWASH to dry on the surface prior
to rinsing - wash small sections of large
surfaces to insure the surface stays wet. - Rinse surface thoroughly after washing.
- When finished, wipe surface with soft cotton
towel or chamois toprevent water spots.
18Avoiding water spots
- Water spots are caused by organic and inorganic
impurities in the water. - If water beads are allowed to air dry, the water
evaporates and leaves a residue on the paint. - This residue may then gradually etch the paint if
it is not removed. - If water marks are a problem, Awlgrip recommends
the use of a water softening system - Alternatively, water marks can be removed with
AWLCARE Protective Polymer Sealer by Awlgrip .
19Water softening systems
- To reduce problems of water marking,Awlgrip
recommends the use of a portable water softening
system. - Water softening systems work by removing minerals
such as calcium, iron, lime and magnesium from
the water supply. - This prevents any water left on the surface from
leaving unsightly deposits and, ultimately,
causing damage to the painted surface. - The best water softening systems can be used
anywhere in the world to treat all the water that
you put on or in your boat. - These work exactly the same way as residential or
commercial water softeners,but have the
advantage of being designedto be portable.
20Stubborn stains
- Stubborn stains may require a higher
concentration of AWLWASH. - Remember, however, that higher concentrations
will require more rinsing. - For very stubborn stains, AWLWASH can be used at
full concentration.
21Why you should NOT use traditional waxes
- After having washed your boat with AWLWASH, do
not be tempted to then use traditional waxes. - Always use the recommended AWLCARE Protective
Polymer Sealer. - Although traditional waxes as long as they
contain no abrasives! will not harm the
Awlgrip painted surface, their application is a
futile exercise - because they break down rapidly
- leaving a residue that attracts dirt AND causes
the topcoat to appear yellow - meaning that the wax needs to be constantly
maintained - hence increasing overall maintenance!
22Using AWLCARE
- Wash surface with Awlgrip AWLWASH Wash Down
Concentrate, rinse and wipe dry. - Shake AWLCARE well and apply with a 100 cotton
applicator or cloth. - AWLCARE can be applied in direct sunlight or in
the shade. - Allow AWLCARE to dry to a haze.
- Wipe off haze by hand with a fresh, clean cotton
cloth - mechanical buffingis not recommended
with AWLCARE. - Note that multiple coats of AWLCARE may be
needed to protect waterrunoff areas.

Cleaning the transom2 Removing stubborn stains
24Cleaning the transom Step 1
- After mixing AWLWASH to the correct
concentration, use a soft brush or wash mitt to
clean from the top of the transom to the bottom.
25Cleaning the transom Step 2
- After thoroughly washing the transom, rinse it
down with fresh clean water, again from top to
bottom. - Then dry it with a chamois or clean dry towelling.
26Cleaning the transom Step 3
- After washing and drying, the surface is now
ready for the application of AWLCARE. - Using a clean dry rag, apply AWLCARE to the
surface in a circular motion.
27Metal polishing products
- NEVER allow metal polishing products containing
acids to come into contact with Awlgrip coatings
as they will damage the surface! - Rain water and dew running off metal fittings
will spread the metal polishs acidic residue
onto the paint surface that will etch and dull
the paint finish. - Metal polishes may discolor and stain the painted
surface.
28Cleaning the transom Step 4
- ALWAYS remove AWLCARE by hand using a fresh,
clean rag. - It is not recommended to buff AWLCARE
mechanically.
29Removing stubborn salt stains Step 1
- Salt stains on a boats hull are unpleasant to
look at, but fortunately they are not too
difficult to remove. - Mix a 11 solution of distilled white vinegar and
warm water in a bucket.
30Removing stubborn salt stains Step 2
- Use a soft rag dipped in the solution to scrub
the entire hull area. - Immediately afterwards whilst the hull is still
wet wash the hull with AWLWASH at normal
concentrations to remove all traces of the
vinegar solution. - Finally, rinse and dry the hull as normal.
31Caring for your boat
- Rinsing your boat with fresh water.
- Drying your boat.
- Ventilating your boat.
- Protective covers tarpaulins.
32Rinsing your boat with fresh water
Remember that fresh water is a safeand readily
available cleaning agent. Owners of
well-maintained boats always wash down with fresh
water after every trip. Get into the habit of
rinsing your boat regularly with fresh water by
doing this you will drastically reduce the amount
of time needed to wash and wax it. Rinsing your
boat does not take much time at the end of the
day and it is good preventative maintenance.
33Drying your boat
- Once you have finished washing your boat it is
good practice to get it dried as quickly as
possible to prevent water marks. - Synthetic chamois and clean towelling are the
best traditional allies for this task, however
34Silicone blades
- you may wish to consider the latest type of
hi-tech water scraping blades that are now
commercially available. - Utilising a soft, flexible silicone blade that
can remove water in one pass without scratching
paint or fibreglass, these tools are claimed to
dry any smooth surface in a third of the timeof
a chamois rag.
For the ultimate result, use a silicone blade
followed by a chamois.
35Protective covers tarpaulins
- Tarpaulin, constructed from heavy-duty vinyl or
canvas,is used to shield the upper decks from
the attack of theelements. - It is particularly useful in protecting painted
and varnishedsurfaces from the effects of UV
rays. - However, when using tarpaulin a delicate balance
mustbe maintained between - on the one hand, ensuring that the paint surface
is adequately ventilated and free to breathe - and on the other, eliminating any chafing
movements. - High performance Awlgrip topcoats should not be
too tightly bound with coverings either
synthetic or natural fiber as moisture can
become trapped and held on the surface. - Over prolonged periods, this may result in a loss
of gloss, blistering, or delamination of the
topcoat.
