Whitewater Middle School
  • Whitewater Middle School is a very natural name
for the new middle school located in the middle
of the new Whitewater community off Belmeade
Road. The new school is also just a short walk
or bike ride from the world class U.S. National
Whitewater Center (USNWC). This school has been
in the planning stages since 2004 with the
concept of creating a true neighborhood school
for the many families who will call Whitewater
home, with opportunities for students to walk and
bike to school each day. Crosland Whitewater,
LLC, the developer for the residential community,
formed an early partnership with CMS that
benefits the new elementary and middle schools in
    numerous ways.
  • Through this partnership, Crosland was able to
participate in planning that yielded integrated
school sites that reduced cost for land and cost
for shared facilities. Other items provided for
the schools include, water and sewer utilities,
extension of Belmeade Road, management of the
installation of the schools associated road
improvements through a cost sharing agreement,
enhanced landscaping, hardscape and art glass
signage for the schools, connectivity via
sidewalks and trails to the Whitewater
neighborhood and the USNWC. This partnership
will continue over the years to provide
opportunities for neighbors to mentor and be
lunch buddies, as well as create numerous
educational opportunities for the students both
at school, at the Whitewater Exploration Center
    and at the USNWC
  • The educational opportunities that will be
available to these students follow themes of
    sustainable development practices, green building
    practices, healthy living habits, ecosystems,
    wildlife habitats, flora fauna, outdoor
    recreation, educational walking tours, exposure
    to Audubon International programs, energy
conservation, water conservation as well as new
    technology opportunities with Whitewater
community partners. Much of the programming can
take place at the Whitewater Middle School and
    Whitewater Academy.

6
Catawba River Middle School
  • The new school is located four tenths of a mile
    from the Catawba River.
  • The river is approximately 220 miles long.
It rises in the Appalachian Mountains and drains
in to the Piedmont where it powerfully flows
through a series of reservoirs that create
mechanisms for flood control as well as produces
    hydroelectricity.
  • The Catawba River was named after the Native
American Tribe that first settled on the banks of
the river in North and South Carolina.

7
James C. Clark Middle School
  • Jim Clark gave 30 years to the
Charlotte-Mecklenburg school system. He began his
career teaching at Spaugh Middle School. He then
continued to Harding Senior High and ended his
career at Carmel Middle School. He returned from
retirement to teach at Harding Evening School.
  • Mr. Clark taught special education, math, drama,
journalism and other subjects as needed. He
touched the lives of thousands of students, often
going above and beyond the call of duty.
  • He often assisted at-risk students in the evening
by arranging job interviews and helping displaced
and homeless students find a place to live. He
gave his all to the school and his students.
