Title: Intensive cultivation of the calenoid copepod, Bestiolina similis

1
Intensive cultivation of the calenoid copepod,
Bestiolina similis
  • Quantifying the effects of food addition on
    survival rates and reproductive success.

History of copepod aquaculture
  • High density captive production of finfish
    ornamentals.
  • The advantage of copepods as a large scale food
    source for juvenile fish.
  • Parameters of an efficient aquaculture system.

5
Hypotheses
  • Two biologic parameters crucial to an efficient
culturing system and which can be optimized
  • 1) Survival rates
  • 2) Egg production

6
Methods and Materials
  • Phytoplankton cultures
  • Cheatoceros
  • Isochrisis
  • Rhodomonas
  • Concentration determined with use of
    hemacytometer.

7
Experimental setup
  • Protocol for determining survival Rates

10-20 mL vials used in each
experimental trial to determine the effects of
varying additions of
phytoplankton cultures on
survival rates
8
Protocol for determining survival Rates
  • 1st) Sorting of copepods
  • 2nd) Addition of phytplankton and calculation
    of the concentration in vials
  • 3rd) Daily monitoring for number of deaths
  • 4th) Daily water samples taken for nutrient
    analysis
  • 5th) Determine survival rates

9
Protocol for determining rate of egg production
  • 1st) 2-1L cultures set up
  • 2nd) Sorting of copepods
  • 3rd) Calculation determining phytoplankton
    volume addition
  • 4th) Timely isolation of copepods
  • 5th) Egg count

12
Note Rhdomonas has highest avg. of copepods
alive at 750 uL addition. Concentration is
2.85105 cells/mL

Conclusions!!
16
Survival rates
  • Best Survival rates obtained from vials
    containing 5.025104 cells/mL Rhodomonas
  • Is this absolute for all cultures?

17
Egg laying rates
  • Most eggs produced (30 eggs/female/day) and
    highest average (15.9 eggs/female/day) occurred
    in culture containing 2.775105 cells/mL
    Isochrisis.
  • Is this absolute for all cultures?

18
Discussion
  • What did this research accomplish?
  • What is the next step in copepod aquaculture?

19
Achnowledgments
  • I would personally like to thank
