Atopic dermatitis is a chronic skin inflammation that is mostly seen in infants of age 2-3 months and above to children under 5 years of age. However, there are cases of this affecting adults as well. A skin disease that lasts for long, atopic dermatitis is associated with itchiness, redness of skin and cracked skin. While the causes till date remain unknown, it is said that people who have atopic dermatitis tend to develop hay fever and asthma. Atopic dermatitis is believed to be a genetic problem. There is also a common belief that environmental conditions can make potentially susceptible individuals more likely to get atopic dermatitis. Other factors include seasonal allergies, varying humidity levels, extreme climatic conditions and reaction to strong detergents.
