CEC Meeting Monday May 26, 2003
2
Emergency Feedback
  • BCOE focus group meeting
  • Session with students
  • Other comments given on survey, by phone or via
    e-mail
  • Surveys sent to groups that have finished their
    rotations
  • 19 surveys collected so far
  • 1 strongly disagree
  • 7 strongly agree

3
Survey - Emergency
4
Overall Strengths
  • -An excellent experience -ER docs were great at
getting student involved, making student feel
like an important part of the team, letting
student do minor procedures, and reviewing the
case thoroughly (making student present, going
over a differential, and the reasons for whatever
investigations they ordered), no matter how busy
    it was
  • -approachable consultants
  • -wide variety of cases (including psych, trauma)
  • -hands-on opportunity (eg suturing, etc)
  • -flexible hours
  • -nurses nice (SSC)
  • -2 weeks adequate/appropriate duration
  • -notable outstanding consultants Drs Regan,
    Dryer, McCauley, Lewell, Greenfield, Theakston,
    Gilkinson, Thompson

5
Overall Weaknesses
  • -some cases with no learning value, and students
were sometimes pressured by staff to pick up
    these charts
  • -discontinuity of consultants, difficult on
deciding who to give your evaluation to
  • -more dialogue needed between elective and
    international students re schedule/shifts (ie.
Some clerks found that the visiting student had
already set their schedule, and the clerk had to
    accommodate around the visiting student)
  • Need more than 2 weeks in the ER

6
Anesthesia Feedback
  • BCOE focus group meeting
  • Session with students
  • Other comments given on survey, by phone or via
    e-mail
  • Surveys sent to groups that have finished their
    rotations
  • 18 surveys collected so far
  • 1 strongly disagree
  • 7 strongly agree

7
Survey - Anesthesia
8
Overall Strengths
  • -a lot of opportunities at intubation
  • -good discussion about drug physiology and
    technique
  • -most consultants were quite personable, and
would encourage student to go to other rooms to
look for stuff to do (if there was nothing to do
    in the current room)
  • -some consultants excellent, noted Dr. Block,
Dr. McCabe, Dr. Anderson, Dr. Ragbey
  • -adequate time to read
  • -good reference book provided by the Department
  • -(SJHC) clerks had 2 consultants for the entire
    selective, better for continuity
  • Dr. Lindsay is the best

9
Overall Weaknesses
  • -some clerks were left alone in the OR
  • -some clerks felt that charting was similar to
    scut work
  • -being sent for coffee
  • -being put in rooms with long cases
  • -questionable teaching sessions, frequent
no-shows, were not re-scheduled, some felt there
    was no teaching
  • -one week sufficient, with the option of 2 weeks
  • -having a new consultant each day
  • -there was no initial orientation
  • -being with only one consultant would be better
  • Keep clerks away from Dr. Coveney
  • Dr. Gordon is a reasonable teacher, but has a
poor attitude, ie constantly berating other
people in the room and says how much he hates
    anesthesia
  • -Some felt that there was little contact with the
    coordinator

10
ENT Feedback
  • BCOE focus group meeting
  • Session with students
  • Other comments given on survey, by phone or via
    e-mail
  • Surveys sent to groups that have finished their
    rotations
  • 6 surveys collected so far
  • 1 strongly disagree
  • 7 strongly agree

11
Survey - ENT
12
ENT
  • good experience
  • -students saw different consultants every day,
which was good (letting us see different parts of
ENT) and bad (hard to build up a relationship, or
to really get comfortable with one area)

13
Optho
  • -excellent residents (Chris Jackman and Al
    Proulx, in particular)
  • -a lot of chances to see patients and use the
neat gadgets, with the residents pointing out
    interesting findings
  • -really enjoyed it
