Neglect in stroke patients has been linked with
impaired self-care and poor outcome of
rehabilitation. Yet, some important indicators of
the rehabilitation outcomes of neglect are
strongly associated with the spontaneous recovery
rate (SRR) of neglect.
A broad computerized literature search was
conducted using three electronic databases,
including (a) MEDLINE, (b) PSYCHLIT, and (c)
CINAHL and reference lists of obtained
literature were carefully reviewed to find
research studies not included in the electronic
search.
The aims of this study were to investigate the
SRR of neglect at different stage of post-stroke
individuals and to explore its related factors.
A systematic review approach was undertaken to
explore the SRR of neglect at different stage of
post-stroke individuals and its related factors.
A total of ten studies that investigated SRR and
met the inclusion criteria were included in this
systematic review. Five factors that influenced
the SRR were identified they are (a) left versus
right hemisphere stroke, (b) characteristics of
healthcare institution where the participants
came from, (c) different methods of estimating
prevalence, (d) numbers of diagnostic tools were
used, (e) screening of subtype neglect.
This study revealed differences in prevalence and
SRR among different post-stroke stages. The
results suggest the prevalence of neglect, the
SRR and its related factors may provide cues for
health care professional in assessing for the
potential for SRR of neglect. The findings also
emphasis the significance of neglect assessment
while conducting research .
