Title: Solutions Networks Seminar Briefing IGESCREW
1 Solutions Networks Seminar Briefing IGES/CREW
- E. Lucien Cox, Jr.
- Crosscutting Solutions Program Manager
- NASA Applied Sciences Program
- January 30, 2007
2Crosscutting Solutions Purpose
- Identify and evaluate candidate configurations
for National Applications (Integrated System
Solution) projects based on assimilation of
targeted Earth Science research results and
assets into decision support tools for societal
benefit - Emphasis on research result evaluations in the
six science focus areas - Perform low-cost, low-fidelity demonstrations/expe
riments to extend benefit to operational systems
(Prototyping) - Use of industry standards and technologies to
enable robust access to Earth Science data - Select qualified personnel to gain experience on
hands-on projects ultimately training future
program contributors - Accelerate and improve the potential of NASAs
Earth Science research results to enhance partner
agencies decisions support systems

8Solutions Networks Commonalities
- Identify and evaluate research results available
models and technology - Form networks of people and organizations within
Earth science to help - Understand partner agency decision support
requirements - Publicized research results represent overall
wisdom of science community concerned with uses
of applications of Earth science data - People are funded to creatively assess options
and develop candidate solutions - SN candidate solutions are submitted in the form
of formulation reports to be submitted to a web
site that must conform to the SN Council
Guidelines - All submitted reports are subject to Quality
Control (of process, product, and people) prior
to being posted on the web - Quality control of the content is the
responsibility of the SN Council. - The SN reports are on a single, publicly
accessible web site with a large inventory of
reports - This results in a large inventory of SN
formulation reports that are readily available to
potential users - SN formulation reports are continually used as
the basis for RPC experiments, ISS development,
and in development of solicitations
9Candidate Solution Development
- Produced by individuals dedicated to the task
- The primary source for candidate solutions will
be published scientific research results
currently available to the Earth Science
community. - The expected estimated resources required for the
development and evaluation of a candidate
solution is 2-3 person-weeks - It is not the responsibility of the Solutions
Network to gather new data, build more models, or
perform research for the purpose of Applied
Science.
10Solution Networks Customers
- National Applications Program Managers
- May use the evaluation reports for assessing the
activity in their fields and for possible
inclusion in solicitations. - The Rapid Prototyping Community
- Use as input for new rapid prototyping
experiments - Partner organizations
- Use as a resource for assessing future
operational uses of NASA Earth-science research
results - Stakeholders
- Use to monitor the progress towards achieving
expedited development of operational uses for
NASA Earth-science research results - The scientific and decision-making community
- Use to find opportunities to engage in
development either independently or partnered
with NASA
11 12Solution Networks Central SN Hub
- Centralized system for the submission and
dissemination of all candidate solutions - Requirements
- A front-end website with readily available,
complete information required for the use of the
site for both contributors and users - High-end graphics on the front page
- On-line templates for submitting candidate
solutions that feeds directly into a database - A database of the entire inventory of candidate
solutions that - Populated by candidate solutions contributed via
the on-line template - Is sortable and searchable by customers by
- Science focus area
- National Application
- Research topic,
- Potential partners
- Decision Support Tool (DST)
- Mission
- Models used
- Required technology
13Solution Networks Central (cont)
- A configuration management system that tracks all
documents from submission until approval - Includes document versioning
- Tracks at least these steps
- New submission
- Document passed QC for process (all fields
successfully filled) - SN Review Council notified
- Approved for posting after passing QC for content
- User notified of acceptance
- Added to publicly available database
- The capability for communicating with
contributors concerning submissions - An interface to the RPC Central website that
tracks links to RPC experiments and the related
SN candidate solutions
14Uses for Solution Networks Inventory
- Basis for RPC experiments
- Use in solicitations
- Basis for ISS
- Avoidance of duplication of effort
- Informational for partner organizations and
stakeholders - Gap analysis of solutions relative to National
Applications - Potential gateway for identifying third-party
developers or new partners
15Formulation Reports
- Formulation reports are the official record of a
Candidate Solution to be stored as part of the
central SN inventory - Typical Reports are 4-6 pages
- Reports submitted using on-line template
- Contents
