The highly anticipated “Orientation Program 2023” of IISM was held at Rangsharda Auditorium, Bandra. This year’s Orientation Program aimed to welcome and empower the incoming batch of students. The candidates from Bachelor of Sports Management (BSM), Master of Sports Management (MSM), Post Graduate Program in Sports Management (PGPSM), Bachelor of Sports Science (BSS), and Master of Sports Science (MSS), along with their parents, attended the event.

Mr. Nilesh Kulkarni, former Indian Cricket Team spinner and Founder-Director of IISM, was the harbinger of a phenomenal avant garde idea to start up a sports management institute in the country. With the inception of International Institute of Sports Management (IISM) in 2010, Mr. Kulkarni laid the path for other schools and universities in the country to develop thorough sports professionals who can capitalize on this surging domain with their relevant education and intensive training.

Y20 supports young people to become future leaders by raising awareness of global issues, exchanging views, arguing, negotiating, and reaching an agreement. To encourage this, the Sports Authority of India (SAI) conducted two-panel discussions at the IISM campus on 29th May 2023, through its Regional Centre in Mumbai. The objective of the panel discussion was to reach out to a greater number of youngsters and provide a lively and energetic setting for the discussion. Sports Science deals with the study of physiology, motor control, biomechanics, nutrition, psychology and biochemistry of an athlete. To meet the increasing demand for sports scientists, IISM launched the ‘School of Sports Science’ and is offering undergraduate and postgraduate degree courses in Sports Science.

The students of the International Institute of Sports Management, Mumbai organized and executed the much-awaited Inter College Sports Management Fest “JUNOON” on 22nd March. This event was held at College Premises (19th and 20th) and Poisar Gymkhana (21st and 22nd). JUNOON is an initiative launched by IISM, Mumbai where students plan various sports and business competitions which encourages learning from peers, teamwork, agility, and critical thinking.

SMAT – Sports Management Admission Test is an online entrance test to apply for admission at IISM. The test is specially designed to cater to a very specific domain – i.e. sports management. The test focuses on candidate’s liking & awareness towards the sports industry & their acumen for the business side of sports. Through this test, candidates shall be tested on their aptitude in Mathematics and English, with an emphasis on their interest and knowledge about the sporting ecosystem. SMAT comes with a 30% weightage for sports-related questions, even though the test focuses on Sports Awareness, it’s not just about Records or Sports Celebrities but about every aspect of the sporting ecosystem. Hence, students are expected to get acquainted with the sports industry as a whole.

In a bid to acknowledge IISM’s industrious efforts, the institute was conferred with the Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Puruskar for Development For Sports by the Government of India. The Khelo India programs are the Indian government’s flagship program to enhance India’s sports culture at the grassroots level through organized talent discovery, organized athletic tournaments, and infrastructure development.

The Indian government has proposed a sports budget of ₹3,397.32 crore to the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. This is an increase of 11% over the previous fiscal year’s budget of Rs. 3,062.30 crore. The sport Kabaddi is very ancient and has been a part of the Indian culture for over 4000 years, since the Mahabharata. In Maharashtra, Kabaddi was called Hututu. In Bengal or Eastern part of India, it was called Hadoodo. In Andra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, it was called Chugudu. An interaction session was planned between Mr. Ranatunga and the IISM students at the IISM campus. The session started with an introduction of Mr. Ranatunga, followed which, Mr. Ranatunga said a few words about his childhood and his humble background. He said his mother was a teacher, and his father a small businessman and a politician. He has five siblings and he is the second child of the six. He completed his studies from a school where his mother was a teacher.

With the launch of two new courses, it is now time to revamp the sports academics & related books and courses. With that motive in mind, IISM is proud to announce the launch of India’s first-ever Sports Academic book ‘Business of Sports- The Winning Formula for Success’ by Mr. Vinit Karnik. Mr. Karnik is Head of Sports, Esports & Entertainment at GroupM South Asia. Mr. Karnik has over 25 years of experience handling affairs in Media, Entertainment, and Sports Management. This book is published by Popular Prakashan and we are grateful to them. The book is launched on 06th June 2022 by the esteemed hands of Shri. Bhagat Singh Koshyari Ji, Governor of Maharashtra and ((ex-officio) Chancellor of the University of Mumbai, at Raj Bhavan in the presence of Mr. Nilesh Kulkarni, Founder Director- IISM, the book’s author Mr. Vinit Karnik, Mr. Harsha Bhatkal, Publisher at Popular Prakashan and other marketing heads & academicians from top B-schools of Mumbai.

Sports Management is a new-age career option for sports lovers that gives them opportunities to look after the business, management, and entrepreneurship side of sports. The study of Sports Management enables professionals to work across numerous verticals in Sports Industry like Sports Marketing, Media, PR, Sports Law, Sports Operations, Sports Event Management, and much more. After all, the size of the Indian Sports Industry in 2020 is estimated at INR 5894 Crore (Source: India Sports Sponsorship Report 2021 by Group M, ESP Properties).

The 2022 AFC Women’s Asian Cup, was the 20th edition of the AFC Women’s Asian Cup, the quadrennial international football tournament in Asia competed by the women’s national teams in the Asian Football Federation (AFC). India was the host for this tournament. 31 students were selected to volunteer at this event and by working at this event they got to experience how such a big sporting event is executed in professional way.

Khelo India Youth Games (KIYG), formerly known as Khelo India School Games (KISG), is a pan-Indian multi-disciplinary sports competition for the country’s under 17 and under 21 years youngsters. It is the Indian Governments flagship grassroots talent hunt programme. KIUG are the games conducted for the athletes from universities across the country. KIYG currently has 25 sports under its belt, whereas the KIUG have around 20 sports that athletes participate in. Under the Khelo India Program, every year 1000 kids are selected under scholarship and trained for International Sporting Events.

Sport is regarded as one of the largest industries worldwide in terms of generating employment and revenue. Sports is a multi-billion dollar global industry propelled by enormous consumer demand. According to Vinit Karnik, national director for sports and live events at GroupM ESP, in the past, sports was seen as a loss-making affair. However, with the formation of newer leagues and successful franchises, “the sports industry has grown by up to 10 percent by the year 2014,” Karnik says.
