Title: LIFEUK Listening Inventories for Education UK version
1LIFE-UKListening Inventories for Education UK
version
- LIFEUK were developed in 1998 to be used during
in a national trial of Classroom Soundfield
Amplification. - The LIFE UK inventories are a modified form of
the LIFE inventories created by K Anderson and J
Smaldino (can be purchased from the US EAA
website)
2LIFE UK
- Now a growing family of assessments
- LIFEUK suited to assessing impact of whole
classroom modifications - Includes teacher pre and post intervention
assessments - Teacher benefit scales
- LIFE-UK IHP (Individual Hearing Profile)
- Specifically aimed at the hearing aid user and
cochlear implant user.
3LIFE UK
- All printable resources are freely available to
download from the Web - www.hear2learn.com
- Latest updates will be posted as they are
developed. - All users are asked to register their details and
be prepared to support future development if
requested.
4LIFE UK
- The original aims of the LIFE questionnaire were
- (1) provide a student self report measurement
tool to identify classroom situations which
present a listening challenge for an individual
student. - (2) provide a teacher report measurement tools to
be used to document the effects of interventions
to improve the listening environment of a
particular student, - (3) provide a valid and reliable measurement tool
which could be used in a pre-test and post-test
format to document the effectiveness of
intervention utilized to improve the classroom
listening environment. - (4) provide material which can be used for
in-service training of school personnel as to
the challenges of listening in the classroom,
making teachers and students aware of particular
classroom listening challenges and - (5) arm the teacher and students with information
to encourage self-advocacy for good classroom
listening environments1. - 1 Anderson and Smaldino (1998) LIFE An

5LIFE UK
- Illustrate LIFEUK in 3 contexts
- Whole Classroom SFA use
- Assessment of an individual benefit
- MHAS Paediatric Trials
- Introduce the revised LIFE-UK for use
specifically with Hearing Impaired Children using
hearing aids or cochlear implants
6Efficacy measures (Pupils) LIFE UK
- Pupils were asked to rate the ease or difficulty
with which they could hear a speakers words in a
variety of situations. - The test has been carried out on 600 children in
the UK. - Tests have demonstrated the task to be highly
reliable.

teacher - Overall there was a substantial ve change e.g.
- Improved attention span
- Stays on task longer
- Follows directions more quickly or easily
- More time teaching, less time in class management

11Nightingales Result
The improvements in the classroom listening
environment following the installation of a
soundfield system were not apparent when using
traditional acoustic measures such as
reverberation time, speech transmission index
(STI) and loss of consonants (Alcons). The
improvements were however evident in the LIFEUK
scores and in teacher scores on the LIFEUK
questionnaires.

19LIFE UK Analysis
20LIFE-UK IHP
- LIFE-UK IHP Listening Inventories for Education
UK Individual Hearing Profile - In the light of data gathered the LIFEUK had been
developed to incorporate several changes - 1 Changes in content This now include examples
of all types of exchanges that take place within
the school setting
21LIFE-UK IHP
- 2 Change in scoring to reflect users wishes and
greater clarity in analysis of results
22LIFE-UK IHP
- A computerised version of LIFE-UK IHP is
currently being developed. It incorporates an
automatic scoring and report facility. We would
like to seek the cooperation of people interested
in developing this further.
23LIFE-UK IHP
- Available as a free download at
www.hear2learn.com - As this is continues to develop we are keen to
receive feedback and data from all using LIFE-UK
