1
Durhams Grand Challenge Interests in the Area of
Production Networks
  • Prof Paul Maropoulos
  • University of Durham

2
Overview of Durhams Track Record
  • Theoretical framework of Digital Enterprise
    Technology
  • Global product design and realisation in the
    context of lifecycle management
  • Risk mitigation by the synchronised
    product/project and enterprise formation
    management on a global basis
  • Aggregate Planning
  • Product and Process Modelling for early stages of
Design, facilitates early planning and production
    route generation
  • Resource-Aware Planning and Capability Analysis
  • Planning of networks and production in early
    stages of enterprise formation

3
Towards Intelligent Resource-Aware Distributed
Enterprises
  • The specification and realization of intelligent
    and
  • resource aware distributed enterprises requires
  • substantial development of the underpinning
    design, modelling,
  • information management and knowledge retrieval,
  • representation and classification technologies.
  • This is a very large, and still largely
    ill-defined technical area
  • and as such, it is a fertile domain for the
    application of
  • emergent synthesis methodologies, in order to
  • consolidate recent advances in life cycle
    management
  • and distributed, co-operative systems that employ
    virtual
  • and augmented reality web-centric technologies.

4
Key Research Concepts to be deployed for this
Grand Challenge
  • Resource-Aware Planning (RAP)
  • Capability Analysis (CA)
  • Competence Profiling Methodology (CPM)
  • Engineering as Collaborative Negotiation (ECN)

5
Resource-Aware Planning
  • Resource-aware planning indicates the creation
of a dynamic inter-relationship between the
planning entities and the enterprise resources,
    humans and machines.
  • The technologies required for implementing the
    resource-aware planning methods include
  • a web-centric co-development environment,
  • unique methods for enriching planning entities
    with knowledge,
  • a flexible planning engine supporting business
driven planning scenarios by using evolutionary
    computing (Genetic Algorithms and Simulated
Annealing) for the intelligent exploration of the
    search space
  • capability analysis techniques for the
human-centric evaluation of planning results and
    improvement feedback generation.

6
Characteristics of Resource-Aware Planning (RAP)
  • RAP is aggregate planning for the early stages of
the formation of the production network
  • These early phases are most critical as they
    largely determine production network performance
    and product lifecycle cost levels
  • Used for the early specification, design and
evaluation of the production network using
    business objectives such as
  • production levels and variety,
  • geographical location and
  • quality, cost and delivery targets.

7
Capability Analysis
  • Capability Analysis is a computational method for
defining the relative priorities of multiple and
    dissimilar enterprise capability factors using
    user-defined criteria.
  • The main objectives of CA are
  • 1.The ability to compare dissimilar indicators of
    performance (capability factors)
  • 2. To identify improvements, as a result of
distributed negotiation, that provide the largest
gains in performance for a given business
scenario, as defined by enterprise experts.

8
Emergent Synthesis as a Result of Deploying RAP
and CA
  • Evaluating options/results within a distributed
    resource-aware planning environment using
capability analysis, invariably leads to human
    intervention resulting in
  • Ambiguity of intentions,
  • the interactive evaluation of interim results
    and/or
  • the interactive specification of new options
    concerning the environments configuration by
    changing the production network design
  • During the early phases of production network
    design there is also
  • incomplete information regarding the product,
  • incomplete information and fluidity regarding the
    selection, availability and deployment of
    enterprise resources.
  • These are characteristics of a Class III emergent
    synthesis problem.

9
Competence Profiling Methodology (CPM) and
Engineering as Collaborative Negotiation (ECN)
  • CPM can be used for capturing the key
    capabilities of production network partners
including human skills and production processes
    capacity.
  • The CPM has been used within Automotive and
    Defence collaborative sectors
  • Durham has extended the initial method to be used
as part of an Agility Audit
  • ECN is a new concept seeking to understand and
formalise the vertical and horizontal negotiation
process as an integral part of the workflow for
    complex products/projects that are developed
    using distributed environments.
  • ECN has been defined within CIRP and there is an
    international working group developing the
    concept.

10
Concluding Comments
  • Durhams Design and Manufacturing Group has an
established track record in enterprise planning
    methods and tools.
  • The novel concepts coming out of this research
can be used in a Production Network related
    Grant Challenge.
