- Some RD to reduce material and to reduce the
number of cooling pipes was initiated under Phase
I SBIR - Essence of concept was to
- Use cooling structures as both local and global
support structures (these are separate in the
current ATLAS detector) - Use (mostly) carbon-material heat pipes
- With condenser at end of volume with only a few
inlet/outlet pipes (instead of order 100 or so
now) - Some simple prototypes were made and tested.
- Phase II SBIR submitted to further develop
concept but was rejected. - Activity directly related to pixels now dead,
some work continuing for space applications along
similar lines.
