How To Prevent Your Lawnmower From Scalping Your
Lawn
  • A list of handy tips and hints that has been
    prepared by Melbournes Mower Centre

2
  • Scalping generally occurs when the turf has been
mowed below its minimum recommended height or
when mowing has removed more than a third of the
    unmown sward height.
  • Scalping exposes the unsightly thatch layer of
your lawn or even bare soil it can take your
lawn a long time to recover from this.

3
  • Level out bumps and dips in your lawn.
  • These commonly occur when trenches have settled
after infilling. Spreading topsoil evenly on the
surface will help to level these dips out.

4
  • Check that your lawnmowers frame is rigid and
    not dropping at the front.
  • This will ensure that your mower is cutting the
grass at an even height the whole way through.

5
  • Mow your lawn using a uniform pressure.
  • Do not force the front of your lawnmower into the
turf, as this will damage the grass as well as
    your mower.

6
  • Only mow your lawn to the recommended height.
  • This will differ depending on the species that
you have planted on your property, so make sure
you find out the appropriate length.

7
  • Never remove more than a third of the unmown
height in a single cut for overgrown lawns.
  • If your grass is quite tall, make sure that you
remove its height in stages until it has reached
    your desired length.

8
  • Only mow when the soil is dry enough to support
    the weight of the lawnmower.
  • If the wheels of the mower are sinking into the
mud, you wont be able to judge how much length
    you are taking off.
