Insecticide Granules

• Performance can be affected by
• The Inherent Characteristics of the Active
  Ingredient
• The Composition of the Granule used to carry the
  insecticide to its designated site.
• Characteristics of Carrier
• Carriers may be organic (e.g. ground corn cobs)
  or inorganic (e.g. clay).
• Pesticide is applied to and adheres to the
  outside of granule.
• Water is usually necessary to release the
  active ingredient.

• Peanut hulls have been attractive to competitor
  companies for a number of reasons
• Cheap cost of goods (esp. as compared to
  fertilizers)
• Favorable Bulk Density (bigger looking bags on
  the shelf)
• Readily Available

  Ready-to-Spread Granules (ß-Cyfluthrin) is
  currently on ammonium sulfate.

Results of Peanut Hull Carrier Evaluation

• The formulations of Cyfluthrin, ß-cyfluthrin
  lambda-cyhalothrin on ammonium sulfate, or
  bifenthrin on fertilizer, were the most effective
  formulations in these screening trials.
• All of the active ingredients when put on peanut
  hulls provided poor control, 18-53 control.
• There was a 46-82 reduction in control when
  peanut hulls are used as carrier as compared to
  ammonium sulfate or fertilizer.

Take Home Message

• Not all turf insect control granule formulations
  are alike!
• Pyrethroids do not work effectively on peanut
  hull granules.
• Bayer Advanced has chosen not to put our
  ß-cyfluthrin (PowerForce) on peanut hulls, but
  on a carrier that ultimately results in effective
  control.
• Bayer Advanced goes to great extremes to make the
  most effective formulations available.
• Bayer Advanced may not always be the least
  expensive formulation, but we market formulations
