6The Sugar-mill yard was the site of many family
activitiesmaking syrup, killing hogs, putting on
a spread. In short, the sugar-mill yard, along
with the porch, was a focal point, a backdrop for
rural culture.
7Bourbon (including two dozen synonyms, including
Home Green) is a cane of particular significance
historically, but it ratoons poorly.
Morphologically, this cane is almost identical to
CP 72-1210.
Black Cheribon (including two dozen synonyms,
including Louisiana Purple) was also of
particular importance both for production and as
the most used ancestor in breeding. This may be
the same cane as Georgia Red.
Ribbon (historical) was famous all over the SE
U.S. for syrup production. It comes back from
the stubble poorly, too, and is not very
productive.

Syrup is 85-91 sucrose and when produced at a
desirable density, crystals form. Judicious use
of invertase . . . . a practical solution after
five years of experimentation.
