When She Was Born
  • DEBORAH SAMPSON was born in 1760 and died on
    April 29, 1827. Deborah SAMPSON was the oldest of
    six children.

Samson's Father Wanted to be a Sailor

DEBORAH SAMPSONS father wanted a better life
for his family. So he went off to sea as a
sailor to make money. Unfortunately, there was a
storm and his ship was lost at sea. His family
never saw him again after that.

Deborah Wants to Fight
  • Deborah Sampson wanted to fight for her country
    in the Revolutionary War, but in those days they
    wouldnt let girls fight. The more she thought
    about it the more she wanted to go in the army.

The Revolutionary War
  • When the Revolutionary War started, Sampson tied
    her hair up and made herself look like she was a
    man so she could join the Army. SAMPSON had to
    disguise herself as a man, and use her brothers
    name in order to fight.

Samson Was Wounded
  • When SAMPSON was wounded in battle by bullets
    hitting her head and leg, a doctor checked her.
    Even though she begged not to be taken to the
    hospital, he took her anyway. He found out that
    she was a woman but he kept her secret.

What We Think
  • We think Deborah Sampson was a clever woman
    because she made herself look like a man so she
    would be able to become a soldier and fight for
    her freedom and a better life for her family.
