1
WFBHS Open Campus Lunch Review
2
Key Questions
  • Are we affording our students a sufficiently safe
    school lunch time experience?
  • If not, what should be done to move us to a point
    of sufficient safety?

3
Safety Concerns
  • Illicit drug use
  • Unsafe driving
  • Sexual activity

4
Options for Consideration
  • Status Quo
  • Parent Choice
  • Privilege
  • Closed Campus

5
Status Quo
  • Lunch Period 1125 AM - 1224 PM
  • ISHP 1125-1151 AM
  • Nearly all students free to spend lunch time on
    or off campus
  • Students who stay on campus restricted to eating
in cafeteria, FH lobby, classrooms, school
    grounds
  • Students deemed unworthy of open campus privilege
(by parents or administration) restricted to
    campus

6
Capacity/Supervision
  • Cafeteria 271 (60) Mr. Henkle
  • Field House Lobby 217 (160) Mr. Gustavson
    and/or Mr. Mogensen
  • Classrooms/labs/LMC 10 to 45 per location (255)
    corresponding staff
  • Rest of building and/or grounds Ms. Levek
    and/or Mr. Mogensen

7
Food Sources For Students on Campus
  • Cafeteria ala carte food service along with
snack, soft drink, and milk machines
  • Field house lobby snack and soft drink machines
  • Food/drink from home or area businesses

8
Transition to Period 5
  • Passing bell sounds at 1220 PM 4 minutes to
    get to 5th hour
  • Faculty/staff especially alert to, and trained to
deal with, possibility of student being under the
    influence
  • Custodial staff cleans up cafeteria and field
    house lobby

9
Parent Choice Option
  • Parents choose either open or closed campus lunch
    for their students
  • Students restricted to campus report to cafeteria
    by 1130
  • Potential for permanent pass to another location
    within the building
  • Students who use ISHP must have pass documenting
    the use
  • May be excused to participate in lunch time
    extra-curricular activity

10
Privilege Option
  • Closed campus lunch for freshmen and students
10-12 with record of unsafe behavior
  • Restricted to eating in cafeteria but may secure
permanent pass to other areas of the building
  • Must have pass documenting ISHP use
  • May be excused to participate in lunch time
    extra-curricular activity

11
Privilege Option
  • Open campus lunch privilege earned via record
free of unsafe behavior during freshman year
  • Privilege increasingly lost with each incident of
    unsafe behavior 1st offense semester, 2nd -
    year, 3rd permanent
  • Manage attendance via student ID card scanning
    system
  • Would necessitate at least one additional lunch
    time supervisor

12
Closed Campus Option
  • Closed campus lunch for all students
  • Either maintain current schedule (provided
adequate lunch eating space can be secured) or
adopt two lunch period schedule (see next slide)
  • Manage attendance by treating each building exit
as an emergency exit during lunch, with cameras
    at each exit
  • Would require at least double current supervisory
    staff

13
Closed Campus Option
  • 1125 - 1150 Lunch A
  • 1154 - 1245 Period 5A
  • 1129 - 1220 Period 5B
  • 1220 - 1245 Lunch B
  • 1249 - 140 Period 6
  • 144 - 235 Period 7
  • 239 - 305 ISHP

14
Previous/Next Steps
  • Presentation to parents (10/14), staff (10/20),
    Principals Advisory Committee (10/22),
    Administrative Council (11/11)
  • Feedback from each presentation taken into
account and acted on, at least in part
  • Survey students regarding current lunch time
    habits prior to winter break
  • Refine/modify options and consider them in
    context of 2010-11 budget development
  • Survey students, staff and parents regarding
preferred options by end of 3rd quarter

15
Other Ideas
  • Given single point of entry/exit during lunch,
record those students who leave campus via ID
    card scanning
  • Observe students returning from off campus lunch
as they re-enter the building via single entry
    point

16
Audience Feedback
  • Questions/comments/concerns?
  • Other ideas for addressing
  • this issue?
