Island Man example 1Analyse the language.
  • In the calming first stanza, Nichols uses
alliteration. For example, the man wakes to the
sound of the surf. Here the s sounds echo the
waves lapping on the shore which creates an image
of paradise. This shows a positive connection
between the man and his homeland. In the same
stanza, the poet uses a metaphor. She describes
the waves steady breaking and wombing. The
waves are constant and reassuring. The word
wombing is clever because it creates an image
of being protected. It connects the man with the
island almost like a mother and a child,
stressing the importance of their relationship.

Island Man example 2Analyse the language.
  • The connection between the man and the island is
cleverly seen in the way the poet uses no
punctuation all the lines flow into each other,
echoing the mans dream-like state and mirroring
the rhythm of the waves. Everything is connected
and, through enjambment, the lines merge together
echoing the way that the man exists in two
places the fond memories of the tranquil
Caribbean and the monotonous routine of dull
London. He drifts in and out of both worlds.
  • This connection with the island is further
emphasised by the use of the pronoun his in
his small emerald island it belongs to him.
Furthermore, the metaphorical use of emerald
creates the image of a precious gem as well as
painting the image of a lush green land, the
island is seen as something that he treasures.
The poet emphasises here the importance of
identity and belonging although the man lives in
London his cultural roots are with the Caribbean.
Finally in the second stanza, Nichols shows the
sun surfacing defiantly. The alliteration makes
the s sound plosive and mirrors the actions of
the sun forcing its way up from the east. The use
of the strong adverb defiantly personifies the
sun and has the effect of suggesting whatever
happens the day will be beautiful, the sun will
find a way through. In some ways, it could be
said that this also describes the man who will
always come back , but his is less defiance
and determination to get up and more a
realisation that he has to. He has to heave
himself to work. The onomatopoeic heave has
    connotations of reluctance, heaviness and
sadness. He is not connected to London but has to
live here his heart is with the small emerald
    isle.
