Title: Touch Judging
1Touch Judging
2Three Main Responsibilities
- Run Touch
- Report on Foul Play
- Render other assistance to the referee
- The fourth dimension Working with Comms.
3Running TouchThings we commonly get wrong
- One foot in one foot out whose ball?
- What is In the 22 is foot on the line in?
- Corner post is touch-in-goal the flag is not
- Refer to the new publication, Line Ball Your Call
4If the ball, which has crossed the
plain-of-touch, touches a player beyond the
touch-line, regardless of whether the player is
on the ground or jumping in the air. The ball has
been put in-touch by the kicking team.
If a player has one foot in the field-of-play and
one foot in-touch, and catches the ball, the team
that kicked the ball has put the ball in-touch.
The non kicking team has the throw-in at the
line-out.
The only situation where play continues after the
ball contacts a player beyond the touch-line is
where the ball has not crossed the plane-of-touch
and the player plays the ball but does not catch
it.
5When is a player jumping in the air considered to
be out?
- When his body is beyond the touch line.

13Law 19 In TouchSummary
- If the ball touches a player beyond the touchline
the ball is in touch - Doesnt matter whether the player beyond the
touchline is in the air or not - Ball caught on the touchline, one foot in, one
foot out, is throw to non-kicking team
14Law 19 In TouchSummary
- Play ONLY continues after the ball has contacted
a player beyond the touchline where the ball has
NOT crossed the plane of touch and the player
plays the ball but does not catch it
15(Thats this one)
IN
- Play on
- May kick or propel it but not hold it.
OUT
16Mark touch using the lines on the field
- Why?
- Makes management on the lineout for the referee
easier - What do players think of it? 1m here, -1m there?
- Players are generally intelligent enough to
understand what you are trying to achieve. Do it
consistently and it will cut both ways.
17Managing the hooker who puts his foot into the
field of play when he throws the ball in
- Is it manifestly, obviously, unfair (for example,
a full step in helps him make a better, cleaner
throw? - If the answer is no, let it go, keep an eye on it
- If yes, manage the situation
18Managing the hooker who puts his foot into the
field of play when he throws the ball in
- Talk to the hooker
- Be brief and matter of fact
- Be polite
- Ask him before he gets busy. Leave it until next
lineout if you notice it late - No co-operation?
- Is it still manifestly unfair?
- Ask again
- Only after you have tried all this bother the ref
with it.
