1
The History and Background of Soweto
  • By Tyler and Alec

2
Where is Soweto located?
  • Soweto is found in an urban area in the City of
Johannesburg, which is found in Gauteng, South
    America.

3
What is the population of Soweto?
  • Soweto is populated with one of the largest black
community. It contains about 900,000 people.

4
Living Conditions of Soweto
  • The conditions of Soweto are actually quite
tragic. The houses of most families are made of
    mud and cardboard.

5
Why was Soweto established?
  • Soweto was established for blacks who were
evicted from another city. When they arrived in
Soweto, or as the men who relocated the blacks
    called it, So Where To?
  • When they reached Soweto, many of the blacks got
    jobs in the gold mines.

6
Causes of the protests of June 1976
  • The protests of Soweto were held as the
government was forcing the students to learn to
speak the language of Afrikaans. However, the
students did not wish to learn the language
because they believed it was the language of the
men who had sent them there.

7
The Protests in Soweto
  • The students began to protest the governments
ruling that would force them to speak Afrikaans.
They carried signs and many other placards. They
did not wish to taunt anyone, as this would be a
peaceful way to show the government their
feelings and opinions. However, it did not work
    out as they had planned

8
The Soweto Massacre
  • During the protests, men hit the streets, who
most people thought were only pretending to shoot
at them with fake bullets. Many people were in
shock as the students dropped to the streets in
pools of blood. Many of the students trampled the
smaller students in the effort of escaping the
    shooters.

9
Hector Pieterson
  • Hector Pieterson was a young boy who was shot and
killed in the hectic Soweto Massacre. A memorial
named after him was dedicated to the 566 people
killed in the tragic shooting. Hector was buried
at the Avalon Cemetary in Soweto.

10
Conclusion
  • As you can now see, Soweto is not a normal town.
Many horrible and unforgettable events have
occurred here, and that Im sure few people will
    ever forget.
