Some Basic Information on Hate Crimes

• In the year 2000, there were 8063 reported
  incidents of hate crimes
• This number does not include incidents of hate
  speech, which is not a crime in most states

• While most other serious crimes are on on the
  decline, hate crimes increased 2.3 in 2000
• Only 20 of reported hate crimes result in arrest

Motivations for Hate Crimes

• In 2000, the leading cause of hate crimes was
  race, followed by religion, sexual orientation,
  ethnicity/national origin, disability, and
  multiple bias incidents

Hate Crimes on Campus

• In 2000, over 10 of reported hate crimes
  occurred on school or college grounds
• This includes 3 at Towson University, 2 at UMBC,
  and twelve at University of Maryland, College Park

Our Goals

• To bring a greater awareness of hate crimes to
  our campus
• To discuss how we can prevent hate crimes in our
  community
• To build a greater understanding between Goucher
  students of all races, ethnicities, national
  original, religions, sexual orientations gender
  identities
• To develop a bias-awareness workshop that will be
  available, if not required, for all incoming
  students
