Several months ago, you agreed to abide by The
Kellogg Honor Code (when you signed your
application)
- The Honor Code governs conduct pertaining to
- Academics
- Recruiting
- Extracurricular activities
It is not the letter, but the SPIRIT of the Honor
Code that makes Kellogg special
2History of Honor Codes in the US
- The tradition of the honor code traces back to
pre-war Southern schools - The College of William Mary instituted the
country's first honor code in 1779 - University of Virginia adopted one in 1842, and
violators are expelled automatically (Darden
School of Business) - In those days, an honor code was simply an
informal vow taken by the sons of plantation
owners not to lie, cheat, or steal. Violators
were ostracized and pressured to leave the
school. - Today, schools have taken on very different
interpretations of the honor code. - Georgetown has an honor system but proctors
exams. - A few older Southern schools, such as Washington
Lee, have preserved the honor code in its most
severe form Cheaters are simply expelled.
3The Honor Code at Kellogg
- The student-managed Kellogg Honor Code was
instituted in 1988 after the faculty determined a
sanction that students later deemed to be too
lenient. - Its mission is to remind us to regard honesty
and integrity as qualities essential to the
practice and profession of management. - One of its strengths is the fact that it is a
living, evolving code that seeks to reflect the
ethical standards of our Kellogg community.
