FIRST IMPRESSIONS UPON ARRIVAL
  • Officials should arrive at the site of the game
    at least 1 ½ hours before the scheduled game
    time.
  • Officials should report directly to the game
    management, thereby assuring them that the
    officials are present

Pre Game Visit With Coaches
  • Referee
  • - Visit each head coach
  • - Give coaches list of officials names and
    positions.
  • - Notify them of length of intermission.
  • - Confirm time and location of coin toss.
  • - Synchronize time.
  • - Ask head coach to verify that all players are
    legally equipped.
  • - Check with each head coach for any unusual
    plays or formations.
  • - Secure name and numbers of captains
  • - Ask head coach if the game ends in a tie (non
    league) if he would like to play overtime.

Pre Game on the Field
  • All Officials
  • - Enter the field fifteen (15) minutes
    together.
  • - Perform all duties in a business like manner.

  • - Split crew up and physically inspect playing
    field and surrounding areas.
  • - Return to the home field side after
    completing inspection.
  • - Direct game management to remove any possible
    hazards on or near the playing field.

  • - At the signal of the Referee, all officials
    will escort their captains to the center of the
    field.
  • - Line Judge will be on the side of his
    captains closest to the Referee.
  • - Back Judge will be on the side of his
    captains closest to the Referee.
  • - Line Judge and Back Judge will introduce
    their captains to the Referee

Three Minutes Before Game Time
  • Head Lines Man, Line Judge, Back Judge and Umpire
    will line up on the opposite 45 yard line in the
    following order.
  • LJ-U-BJ-HL (nearest their sideline)

Coin Toss
  • Referee
  • - Introduce game captains. Introduction of game
    officials is optional.
  • - Announce that you are going to catch the coin,
    and if you drop it you will flip it again.
  • - After catching the coin verbally confirm the
    captains call before uncovering the coin.
  • - Explain the options to the winning captains by
    stating you may kick, receive, defend a goal or
    defer to the second half.
  • - If the winning captain elects to defer his
    choice to the second half, point to him and
    give the incomplete signal then give the losing
    captains their options.
  • - Place captains in position facing the goal
    which they will defend.
  • - Signal only the winning captains choice by a)
    swinging a leg to indicate kicking, b) simulate
    a catch of to receive is the choice, or c) Point
    both arms extended horizontally if a goal is
    selected.
  • - Back Judge places the ball at the forty yard
    line of the kicking team when the Referee
    indicates their choice.
  • - All officials join Referee and review results.
  • - Hustle to your positions and prepare for
    kickoff.
