METEO-FRANCE ACTIVITIESRELEVANT TO
MEGHA-TROPIQUES

OPERATIONAL GLOBAL ASSIMILATION
  • STATUS global 4D-VARassimilating directly
microwave radiances from the current AMSU-A and
AMSU-B instruments available on operational polar
    orbiting satellites (and assimilating also
    infra-red radiances)
  • ONGOING WORK ON MICROWAVE DATA only a small
number of MW channels is currently used over
land studies performed to use more channels
also to use more instruments (SSM/IS). Improving
monitoring and quality control, especially in
    cloudy areas.
  • PERSPECTIVES FOR MEGHA-TROPIQUES (i) More
frequent MW observations in the tropics better
diurnal cycle in the global data assimilation?
(ii)Perspective of real-time monitoring of some
Megha-Tropiques data, if available in real-time

3
EXPERIMENTAL ASSIMILATION OVER AFRICA
  • AMMA (African Monsoon Meteorological Aspects)
will be an opportunity to test experimental data
assimilation systems over Africa, at higher
resolution compared to operational 4D-VAR, from
    2006 onwards.
  • MAIN ASSIMILATION SYSTEM FOR AMMA A limited area
3D-VAR at 10km resolution over Africa (coupled
with the global system). Development efforts made
to analyse humidity, clouds and convective areas
    correctly.
  • PERSPECTIVES FOR MEGHA-TROPIQUES efforts on the
use of microwave data, for improving the water
cycle modeling in the tropics, up to a few days
    range.

MODELLING TROPICAL CYCLONES(LA REUNION INDIAN
OCEAN)Contact Samuel Westrelin
(samuel.westrelin_at_meteo.fr)
  • STATUS Some specific models and assimilation
systems are run daily for the specialized
    tropical centre of La Réunion
  • ONGOING WORK ON TROPICAL CYCLONES (i) Higher
resolution analysis and its impact on cyclone
forecasting. (ii)Diagnostics on surface fluxes in
    cyclonic environment.
  • PERSPECTIVES FOR MEGHA-TROPIQUES (i) Impact of
microwave data on a high resolution analysis and
on forecasts? (ii) Can a display of
Megha-Tropiques data help cyclone forecasters for
    evaluating the cyclone intensity? (iii)
    Observation of surface fluxes.
