The Numbers
  • 36 participants
  • (50 more than we had projected)
  • 18 Hispanic/Latina women
  • 17 Caucasian
  • 1 Sudanese woman
  • 35 children
  • 10 technical faculty
  • 2 workshop facilitators
  • 4 translators/co-facilitators

Results knowledge on non-traditional careers
  • Curriculum developed and translated into Spanish
    to support the project
  • Participants learned about non-traditional
    careers in general and what Riverland has to
    offer
  • learned which careers matched their skills and
    interest via self-assessments
  • 35 expressed interest in enrolling in a
    non-traditional career nearly all need ESL or
    development course work before they could enter a
    technical program

Results - overcoming fear of attending college
  • Participants
  • Became comfortable at the college overcame
    fears and experienced the quality child care that
    is available
  • learned how to apply for admission and financial
    aid
  • formed an informal support group and developed
    friendships with other participants many
    carpooled and found common interests, including
    their children who accompanied them each week

Results social and technical learning
  • Participants
  • Used computers (some for the first time) to
    complete interest inventories KUDER assessment
  • Interacted with women from several cultures other
    than their own and gained a better understanding
    of each culture
  • Children had a positive experience in the child
    care centers
  • mothers overcame fear of leaving children in
    child care
