4Summary of changes to the curriculum approval
process
- Pre-approval by the new University Curriculum and
Planning Committee (UCPC) this replaces the
filing of the indication of support (IoS) form. - Arizona Board of Regents has established a new
Academic Affairs Committee (AAC). This committee
will annually review the strategic plans for
curriculum development submitted by each of the
three universities.
5Pre-approval process
- Pre-approval process by the University Curriculum
and Planning Committee (UCPC) Committee headed by
Senior Vice President for Academic Programs David
Young. - Staff support provided by Julie Ramsden
6Pre-approval process
- Submit Curriculum Development form (CDF) through
your college deans office. - Only authorized people in the deans offices can
submit CDF forms to the curriculumplanning_at_asu.edu
account which is the required mode of submission
for CDF forms. - CDF forms for new concentrations and certificates
are reviewed on a rolling basis, - There are two deadlines each semester for
submission of CDF forms to the UCPC committee for
new degrees
7ABOR, Academic Affairs Committee (AAC)
- This committee will review and approve the
strategic plans submitted by each of the three
universities annually. Curricular items that
receive the approval of the AAC committee will
then move forward through the internal approval
processes in each university, but will not go to
ABOR. - Programs with fees and those programs that
require new state money will still go to the
Board of Regents for approval

- An advisory body comprised of faculty from
colleges at all campuses of the university was
established this summer, replacing multiple

10For existing programs
- Proposals that require Graduate College approval
are - Changes to existing graduate programs
- Total credit hr. req., core course changes,
comprehensive exam changes, culminating
experience changes, etc. - Concurrent degree programs (both degrees at ASU)
- Bachelors/Masters accelerated programs
(typically both in the same discipline) - Master in Passing for doctoral degrees (for 84 cr
hr post bachelors doctoral programs) - Dual degree programs with institutions with which
ASU has an institutional agreement
11Recent graduate policy changes
- Doctoral programs are no longer required to
include at least 24 cr hrs of a combination of
research (792) and dissertation (799) in student
programs of study. - Instead, 12 cr hrs and only 12 credit hours of
dissertation (799) registration is required. The
rest of the hours can be any combination of
research and coursework. This does not change the
total 84 cr hr minimum cr hour requirement.
12Recent graduate policy changes
- COMMITTEE MEMBER DEFENSE PARTICIPATION PROCEDURES
- All committee members must be present at the
defense, and a minimum of 50 of the students
official committee must be physically present
with the student at the defense. If at least 50
of the committee cannot be physically present,
the defense must be rescheduled. - The chair (or one co-chair) of the committee must
be physically present at the defense. If this is
not possible, the defense must be rescheduled. - A committee member who cannot be physically
present at the defense may participate in the
defense in one of several ways. These options
are listed in the preferred order - The absent committee member videoconferences into
the defense location - The absent committee member teleconferences into
the defense location - By providing a substitute to be physically
present (approved by the committee chair and the
head of the academic unit) for the defense only.
