CANbus cabling What to do.
  • Check Continuity
  • CAN data lines
  • Measure impedance
  • 60? ? OK
  • 120? ? Cable broken in one place
  • High Z ? Cable broken in at least two places
  • CAN power lines and Shield
  • Short lines check continuity using a digital
    multimeter
  • Long lines Put known voltage in one side of the
    cable and measure the voltage in the other side.
  • Check that the shield is connected to earth in
    both sides of the cable

CANbus cabling What we need
  • Power Supply Adjustable from 15 to 20V. Output
    current limit around 2A.
  • Digital multimeter, Amperimeter, and a box with
    tools.
  • 1 board that allows to connect the Power Supply
    to the CANbus Power lines.
  • 1 board to have access to all the lines of the
    CANbus cable, using an Oscilloscope and a Digital
    multimeter.

  • Output Connector DB9 male
  • Power Connector 2 pins to conect the Power
    supply cables

ADC-I CANbus communications What to do.
  • Once we have checked the cabling
  • Try to communicate with each one of the 16 ADCs
    that there are in one CAN branch.
  • If someone fails
  • Check the input voltages of the drawer, to see if
    the drawer is powered properly.
  • Observe the traffic of the CANbus data line with
    an Oscilloscope, to see if the ADC is replying
    and to check the signal integrity.
  • Run the QC program, using a laptop with a
    PCMCIA-CAN2 card.
  • If QC fails ? The ADC-I must be replaced.

  • The same that we need to check the cabling
  • Power supply, Digital multimeter, Amperimeter,
    tools.
  • 1 board to connect the power supply to the
    CANbus.
  • 1 board to have access to all the lines of the
    CANbus
  • 1 oscilloscope
  • Laptop with National instruments PCMCIA-CAN2 card
  • VME crate with 1 ROB
  • Cable Belden 9844 for dual CAN lines.

Status of the Components
  • Power Supply.
  • We can use a power supply from IFAE or try to get
    a power supply from CERN.
  • Oscilloscope There is one at CERN.
  • Cable Belden 9844 for dual CAN lines.
  • We can get this cable at CERN.
  • VME crate.
  • We can use a VME crate from IFAE or try to get
    one at CERN.
  • All the rest of the things that we need are
    ready.
