16Athletic Fields Recent History

- Communities voted not to conduct
- Capital Project Advisory Committee
- Previously identified athletic fields as a
priority. - Upon completion of the project conceptual plan,
decided that the athletic field would have to
wait to be addressed in a future capital project.
17Athletic Fields Recent History
- 12/16/03 Firemans Field Meeting
- Superintendent met with representatives of the
Colton Fire Dept. Town of Colton - Effort to maintain the relationship
- Concerns about annual vandalism
- Field used a few times per year by the Fire Dept.
- School offer of a 10-year lease was unobtainable
because firemen were considering selling the
field - Investigated fencing to reduce vandalism --
50,000 to 60,000 to enclose the field - Contacted Fort Drum about fencing to be removed
to expand an airstrip. This was not accomplished
due to time, labor, and transportation
constraints.
18Athletic Fields Recent History
- May 2004 Contingency Budget
- This budget resulted in some transportation cuts
(including designated transportation for off-site
practices) for the 2004-05 school year and
beyond. - Students can still ride on regular bus runs that
go by Firemans Field and Swift Field to get
there. Parents pick the students up at the field
instead of the school. - Off-site transportation remains a concern.
19Athletic Fields Recent History
- 2004-05 Conversations with Board of Education
- Superintendent had several conversations with the
Board of Education regarding the status of
athletic fields during the upcoming building
project and vandalism at Firemans Field.

- In response to prior conversations funds were
included in the 2005-06 school budget to do a
study of the athletic fields currently used by
the district.

from architects on the proposed athletic field

King King Architects, LLC. to conduct the
athletic field study.
23Athletic Fields Recent History
- 2/15/2006 Fields Prioritized
- At the February board meeting, the Superintendent
requested to form a school/community advisory
group to study sports fields, bus garage, and
school roofs. The Board directed him to look at
physical education and athletic fields first.
24Athletic Fields Recent History
- 3/15/2006 Study Almost Complete
- At the March board meeting, the Superintendent
reported that the athletic field study was
nearing completion. The process of setting up a
school/community advisory group was under way.
25Athletic Fields Recent History
- May 2006 Advisory Group Formed
- The May 2006 issue of News-N-Notes included
information about the formation of an athletic
field advisory group and included a volunteer
sign-up form. The first meeting of the group was
scheduled for May 22, 2006, at the school.
26Athletic Fields Recent History
- 6/21/2006 Findings Presented
- At the June board meeting, the Superintendent
reviewed all of the information gathered for the
athletic field study. He informed the Board of
Education that the athletic field advisory group
will meet on June 27, 2006, at 7 p.m. at St.
Patricks Parish Center with King King
Architects, LLC.

30Athletic Fields Recent History
- 6/27/2006 Advisory Group Decides
- The Superintendent and athletic field advisory
group met with King King Architects, LLC. - After reviewing the findings, the advisory group
did not recommend pursuing a capital project. - The group recommended top dressing Swift Field.
This was completed in the Summer of 2006.
31Athletic Fields Recent History
- August 2006 Backstop Destroyed
- It came to the schools attention on September
3rd that severe damage had been done to Firemans
Field
32Athletic Fields Recent History
- Fall 2006 District revisits options
- Due to the vandalism and years of decline, the
baseball field is not safe to play on. The
Firemen are also actively looking to sell the
field. District must make a decision. - Capital Project (new field on site)
- Significant investment in current facility (not
owned by the district) - Alternatives to baseball
33Athletic Fields Recent History
- 3/1/2007 Lacrosse is Presented
- The Board of Education was presented with a
potential solution to the field issue. Lacrosse
could be played on the school site with minimal
additional cost. The Board asked for more
information to be gathered.
34Athletic Fields Recent History
- Spring 2007 Elementary Lacrosse
- Several volunteers provided after school lacrosse
for 5th and 6th graders. This effort was met
with great enthusiasm by the students.
35Athletic Fields Recent History
- Spring 2007 All away games
- Baseball field is not safe for competition.
Baseball teams play all games as away games (with
the exception of 3 modified games).
36Athletic Fields Recent History
- May 2007 Interest Survey
- The Athletic Director sampled High School
students on their interest of playing baseball
and lacrosse. The sample showed a general
balance of interest between the two sports. A
more formal Fall survey also showed a balance. - Sampling errors were reported in both.
37Athletic Fields Recent History
- July 2007 Lacrosse Solution
- Board of Education decides to provide lacrosse at
CPCS. - Field safety
- Field availability (Firemen actively looking to
sell) - Declining enrollment (deters from major capital
investment) - Valid alternative (interest survey)
- Growing sport within Section X
- Ability to start program at minimal cost
38Cooler/Freezer
- The Cooler/Freezer was replaced in 2007 through
an emergency project using EXCEL State funding.
This was done at no local cost to the taxpayers.
39French Drain
- The French drain on the West side of the physical
education / athletic field must be extended to
address the standing water issue on that field.
This will be completed in the Spring of 2008.
40School Sign
- One priority identified was to erect an
electronic school sign to advertise upcoming
school/community events and to recognize student
achievements.
41Electric Panels
- Electric panels in the technology room (shop
area), science hallway, and kitchen are out of
date and have become a safety hazard. They are
in need of replacement.
42Kitchen
- The district needs to replace a non-working stove
and a fire suppression system in the kitchen.
43Roof Replacement
- All roofs on the main school building and bus
garage need replacement except the new
music/gymnasium addition. The old roofs are
20-plus years old and are no longer covered by
warranty. We have leaks in the speech room,
staff break room, A-wing hallway, 1st grade
classroom, Library Media Center and in the
science suite of classrooms.
44Bus Garage
- The bus garage location is a safety concern. It
is an ageing facility that needs a new lift,
roof, and windows. Height of work bay needs to
be increased as well as the length of the garage
work bay to accommodate large capacity busses and
newly designed, higher profile busses. - The safety inspector recently informed the
district that the large brown garage needs its
foundation replaced.
45Declining Enrollment
- The district is experiencing over a 25 decrease
in enrollment (423 to 299) over the course of 10
years (2003-2012). - Higher cost/student
- Need for creative solutions
- Shared Services
There is no indication at this time that this
trend will change.
46Summary
- Long Range Strategic Planning
- Facilities Issues
- Fiscal Responsibility
- Programs for Children
- Declining Enrollment
- Shared Services
