3What is the GLOBE Programme?
- An international environmental education project.
- Children in schools take measurements of their
local environment. - They put the data onto the GLOBE database on the
Internet. - All results can be seen by everyone at any time.
4GLOBE to date...
- Initiated by US Vice-President Al Gore in 1994.
- Run by the US Government through partnership
agreements with other countries. - UK Government signed up in 1995.
- A pilot study for the UK was carried out by The
Wildlife Trusts in 1997.
5GLOBE in the UK
- Launched on 26 November 1998 with support from
Michael Meacher, David Attenborough and the US
Embassy.

29So - Whats in it for me?
- The GLOBE activities support your classroom
teaching, providing relevant proven activities to
satisfy National Curriculum Statements for
Geography, Science, Maths, English, ICT - and
the 8 Doorways of Sustainable Schools
30GEOGRAPHY
- Level 1 2 Use resources, information that are
given to them and their own observations to ask
and respond to questions about places and
environments. - Use appropriate geographical vocabulary.
- Level 3 Aware that different places may have
both similar and different characteristics. - Level 5 Select and use appropriate skills and
ways of presenting information to investigate
places and environments. - Level 6 Select information and sources of
evidence, suggest plausible conclusions and
present findings graphically and in writing.
31SCIENCE
- Level 2 Use simple equipment and make
observations related to their task. - Use scientific vocabulary and record using
tables. - Level 3Respond to suggestions and put forward
ideas about how to answer a question. - Level 4 Make predications.
- Select information from sources provided.
- Plot points to form simple graphs and interpret
patterns in their data. - Level 5Make predictions based on scientific
knowledge and understanding. - Draw conclusions consistent with evidence and
relate these to scientific knowledge.
32MATHEMATICS
- Level 2Gather information and record results in
simple lists, tables and block graphs. - Level 3Extract information from tables.
- Construct bar charts and pictograms, interpret
info. - Organise work and check results.
- Level 4Collect data, construct and interpret
line graphs. - Present info in a clear and organised way.
- Level 5Compare two distributions.
- Interpret graphs and diagrams and draw
conclusions. - Identify and obtain necessary information.
- Check results and decide whether they are
sensible. - Level 6Interpret, discuss and synthesise
information presented in a variety of
mathematical forms.
33ICT
- Level 2Enter, save and retrieve work.
- Level 3Use ICT to find and use stored
information. - Generate, develop, organise and present work.
- Share and exchange ideas with others using ICT.
- Level 4Present information in different forms
and be aware of the intended audience. - Level 5.Select information needed for different
purposes, check accuracy and organise it.
34Sustainable Schools
- Core Aims
- Acquiring new skills behaviours for climate
change - School efficiency energy improvements
- Sustainable communities and biodiversity
- The Eight Doorways
- Energy Water
- Travel traffic
- Buildings grounds
- Local well-being
- Global Dimension
35What does GLOBE measure?
- WEATHER
- WATER
- SOIL
- LAND COVER
- PHENOLOGY
- SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
- All based on GPS Measurements
36GLOBAL POSITIONING SYSTEM (GPS)
- GPS receives signals from satellites to give the
accurate position of any location in latitude and
longitude. - GLOBE uses GPS measurements at each study site to
record its location.
37WEATHER
- Clouds - type and amount
- Temperature - maximum, minimum, and current
temperature - Precipitation - rain and snow fall
- Acidity (pH) of rainfall
- Air pressure
- Aerosols
