Title: Institute for Particle
1Institute for Particle Physics Phenomenology
University of Durham
The Institute for Particle Physics Phenomenology
(IPPP) is a joint venture of the University of
Durham and the UK Particle Physics and Astronomy
Research Council (PPARC). The aim is to foster
world-class research in particle physics
phenomenology - the bridge between theory and
experiment in the study of the tiny building
blocks of all matter in the universe and of the
forces that operate between them. For an example
of phenomenology in action, see Hunting the Higgs
Boson overleaf. The IPPP also provides a forum
for interaction between UK particle physics
experimentalists and theorists, coordinating
common interests and future research through a
series of discussion meetings, workshops and
conferences.
An extensive visitor programme brings
international researchers to Durham all year
round. From 2002, the IPPP will be located in a
new building the Ogden Centre for Fundamental
Physics (above) - located next to the Physics
Department. The IPPP also provides training for
the next generation of UK particle physicists
through guidance in PhD research, and dedicated
graduate lecture programmes and summer schools.
IPPP staff members also supervise projects in
phenomenology as part of the fourth year of the
MSci degree. Public outreach is given a high
priority, with visits to schools, public
lectures, and a regular series of Masterclasses
