What was the Renaissance?
  • The Renaissance was a rebirth of ideas in
    architecture, science, math and artwork
  • The Renaissance focused on ideas of Humanism
which was a celebration of earthly things, human
traits and abilities, and the potential of people
    to do amazing things
  • The artwork of the Renaissance reflected these
    ideas

4
How Did the Artwork Change?
  • The Renaissance patrons wanted art that showed
joy in human beauty and lifes pleasures.
Renaissance art is more lifelike than in the art
of the Middle Ages. Renaissance artists studied
perspective, or the differences in the way things
look when they are close to something or far
away. The artists painted in a way that showed
these differences. As a result, their paintings
    seem to have depth.

Oil?

    Painting
  • He was detailed, included symbols, perspective
    and realism

  • The Middle Ages artwork had religious themes and
    this continued through the Renaissance
  • But Renaissance artwork was also influenced by
humanist ideas, and so began interpreting
    religious subjects in new ways
  • Renaissance art also began to focus on portraits
    and landscapes

Religious Artwork
  • The Church was the inspirer and purchaser of most
    Renaissance artwork
  • Humanists wanted to understand man, and mans
    relationship to God.
  • Many wealthy people wanted to ensure their own
salvation and decided to pay for specific
    religious artwork
  • This could get them out of purgatory earlier

Sculpture
  • Sculptors in the Middle Ages were often seen as
    craftspeople rather than artists
  • They were part of the construction team of
cathedrals, and often carved figures that told
    Biblical stories
  • During the renaissance, their roles changed
    sculptors became celebrities with international
    reputations.
