Technology Literacy Assessment Arizonas IID
Accountability ProjectSpring, 2006
2
Why Assess?
  • No Child left Behind requires all students to be
technology literate by the end of 8th grade.

3
  • In order to meet this requirement, the Arizona
Department of Education is requiring all
districts that receive Title IID funds to assess
a random sampling of 5th and 8th grade students.

4
  • TUSD has been required to assess 1,375 5th
    graders and 1,375 8th graders.

5
Why 5th Grade?
  • 5th graders were chosen to take this assessment
to give them time to improve and remediate their
technology skills by the time they reach 8th
    grade.

6
Which Students Will Be Taking the Assessment?
  • 5th grade classes and 8th grade social studies
classes were selected to take the assessment
    based upon their demographics.

7
Which Demographics are Used as Criteria for
Taking the Assessment?
  • Since 14 of all students in TUSD are classified
as ELL, the classrooms selected to take the
assessment mirrored this demographic. In order to
ensure 14 of the 2,700 taking the assessment
were ELL students, some of the classes chosen had
a slightly higher or lower percentage of ELL
    students.

8
When Will the Assessment be Given?
  • The pre-assessment will be taken by students
    between Nov. 8 20, 2006.

9
What is the Format of the Assessment?
  • The assessment will be taken online. It should
take students no more than 45-50 minutes to
complete. The test is not timed, so if students
do not complete the test within a given time
period, they will have the opportunity to finish
    it at another time.

10
Where Can the Assessment Be Administered?
  • The assessment can be administered in the
classroom, in a mini-lab or any computer setting
    at the school site.

11
What Technology Standards Will Be Covered By This
Assessment?
  • Technology strands 1-5 will be assessed, but not
strand 6. Arizona Technology standards may be
    found athttp//www.ade.state.az.us/standards/t
    echnology/default.asp

12
What Types of Skills Will be Assessed?
  • The assessment will contain questions that will
test a variety of skills, including
    telecom/Internet, databases, multimedia
    presentations, spreadsheets social and ethical
issues, word processing and systems and
    fundamentals.

13
What Types of Questions and How Many Questions
Will Be On Each Assessment?
  • The 5th and 8th grade assessments will each
contain 45 questions. There will be two types of
questions, knowledge based (multiple choice) and
    performance-based.

14
What is the Reading Level of the Questions?
  • The 5th grade assessment is written at a 3rd
grade level, while the 8th grade assessment is
written at a 6th grade level.

15
What Accommodations May Be Made for Exceptional
Ed and ELL Students?
  • None, unless the accommodations are stated in a
students IEP. Test proctors may only pronounce
words in the question and not in the answer.
Proctors will also be unable to provide
    definitions of words.

16
Who are the Proctors?
  • Technology Liaisons/Network Techs have been asked
to serve as proctor for the administration of the
assessment. Any IC who wishes to attend a
training with the tech is welcome. Proctors will
be responsible for helping students log in and
