Overview

Starting

• Prepare a digital audio file in WAV or linear MP3
  format
• Open Transcriber and open the audio file to see
  the signal
• Play the sound either by clicking the play button
  or hitting the tab key

Settings

• Establish global parameters
• File encoding (fonts, character set, e.g.
  Unicode)
• Localisation of interface is possible
  (Options/General)
• Set automatic save

Segmenting

• Play the audio and hit return key to establish
  chunks
• Type in the transcript
• Use of standard codes for non-textual items (e.g.
  meta-linguistic notes, coughs, pauses, prosodic
  information)
• Move boundaries by control-click

Formats

• Audio files - WAV 16bit/44khz, may be downsampled
  to linear MP3
• Transcriber uses an XML format for the transcript
  (file has .trs extension)
• Exports to several other formats
• Transcripts can be read by various other software
